WATERBURY, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team snapped a seven-game losing streak in a big way on Friday, downing Post University by a 5-1 margin at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
After starting the season 4-0-1 and the seven-game losing skid, Saint Anselm improves to 5-7-1 on the year and to 2-4-1 against Northeast-10 Conference play. Post drops to 5-8-0 on the year and to 3-3-0 versus the league.
Saint Anselm jumped ahead by a 3-0 score in the first period and never looked back, pouring home the final two goals after Post cut into the lead late in the first with its lone marker of the game.
Junior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) logged the first hat trick of the season for Saint Anselm, finishing with a career-high four points (3-1=4) of offense. Sophomore Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) logged three assists, a career-high mark, and classmate Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) notched two helpers.
Sophomore Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.), junior Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) each picked up assists for the Hawks in the winning effort as eight student-athletes posted at least one point of offense for Saint Anselm.
Freshman Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) put the Hawks ahead just 1:53 into the game, scoring his first collegiate goal to create a 1-0 lead. He finished the game with 13 face-off wins, ranking second on the team in that statistic.
Set up by Andary and Murphy, senior Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) put home his fourth goal of the season in the game's ninth minute, a tally that stood up as the game-winning goal on Friday. The first of three goals by Andary followed as Saint Anselm built up a three-goal lead just 16:53 into the game.
Post scored in the stanza's final 1:01 as Jake Raleigh, set up by Evan Lugo and Trey DeLoury, temporarily slowed the Saint Anselm momentum heading into the first intermission. The Eagles had the offensive momentum, generating 15 of the first 25 shot attempts, but the Hawks led where it counted.
Two goals by Andary in the second, including his second tally of the day just 57 seconds into the period, rounded out the scoring on the evening. The Hawks maintained the lead with 23 shots in the final two periods alone, building up an offensive cushion for Saint Anselm netminder Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.).
Howard finished the game with 25 saves on 26 shots, earning the victory for Saint Anselm. Post starter Brandon Brown was pulled after conceding four goals on the first 10 shots. Drew Blodgett performed admirably in goal for the Eagles in relief, stopping 20 of the game's final 21 shots on net.
Saint Anselm returns to action at Post on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
