PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey meets Assumption in NE10 action

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team looks to snap its six-game losing skid on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference play.

The Hawks fell to Saint Michael's College in their return from the holiday break, falling by a 3-2 score on Jan. 4. Saint Anselm has now lost its last six contests, pushing its overall record to 4-6-1 and 1-3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Saint Anselm was scheduled to compete in the W.B. Mason Winter Classic hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh but the Hawks withdrew due to institutional health and safety protocols. After the matchup with the Greyhounds, the Hawks continue their road trip and head to Post University for a weekend series with the Eagles on Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Greyhounds captured a weekend sweep of Saint Michael's on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8 by 3-2 and 8-2 scores. Assumption improves to 6-7-1 on the season and 3-3-0 in conference play. After hosting the Hawks, the Greyhounds are off until Tuesday, Jan. 18 when they head to Franklin Pierce University before playing a home-and-home series with Stonehill College on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22.

Fans attending the contest at the Worcester Ice Arena are expected to familiarize themselves with the Assumption University spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • A hot start by the Purple Knights put the Hawks in a 2-0 hole early in the first period, but the team battled back as junior Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) netted goals in the second and third period which knotted the game at two. However, a late goal by Saint Michael's pushed them to a 3-2 win.
  • Junior alternate captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) recorded a pair of secondary assists against Saint Michael's and has now recorded five in the last three games. He is the team leader in goals with six, tied for the team lead and fifth in the NE10 with seven helpers, and leads the squad with 13 (6-7=13) points. Andary has recorded at least one point nine of 11 games this season.
  • Junior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) is tied with Andary with seven helpers and is tied for second on the team in points with nine (2-7=9). Joining Hayes is senior Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) who has three goals and six helpers on the year.
  • Sophomore Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) has lit the lamp five times this season, which puts him in second on the team in goals.
  • Cordeiro's goal makes him the 16th student-athlete to find the back of the net for the Hawks. It was also the sophomore's first collegiate goal.
  • Junior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) made 17 saves in the losing effort against the Purple Knights. He has started in all 11 games for the Hawks and holds a 3.02 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. Howard has compiled 290 saves through 11 games, averaging just over 26 saves per game.
  • The Hawks are converting on the power play at an even 12% (6-50) while killing off penalties at an even 80% (11-55). On the six-game losing stretch, Saint Anselm has lost by two goals or less in four of the contests.
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
  • The Greyhounds snapped their four-game skid with their weekend pair of wins against Saint Michael's. The team is now 6-7-1 overall with a 3-3-0 mark in NE10 contests. Assumption was tied with the Hawks in the preseason coaches' poll to finish second in the conference.
  • Devan Sheth ranks second in the conference with 10 goals this season. Colin Philippon has found the back of the net nine times which is third most in the conference while Robert Holyoke is tied for fourth in the conference with seven tallies.
  • Ronny Paragallo has a team-high seven assists while Holyoke, Sheth, and Dante Maribito have six assists each. Maribito was named the NE10 Player of Week on Monday afternoon after scoring three goals against Saint Michael's.
  • Sheth is tied for second in the conference with 16 points. Holyoke is tied with Andary with 13 points while Philippon has 12.
  • David Altman has drawn nine starts for the Greyhounds and was named the conference's Goaltender of the Week on Monday after stopping 72 shots in a three-game week for the Greyhounds. He is 4-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Drew Benedict and Thomas McLarnon have combined to start the other five contests. Both goaltenders are 1-2-0 with Benedict holding a 3.50 goals against and a .866 save percentage while McLarnon has a 3.90 and .836, respectively.
  • The Greyhounds have scored 11 power play goals on 53 opportunities this season, converting at 20.8%. They are killing off penalties at 77.8%, allowing 14 goals in 62 times short handed.
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
  • This will be the 43rd meeting all-time between the Hawks and Greyhounds. Saint Anselm holds a 31-8-3 record over Assumption in the all-time series.
  • In the 2019-20 season, the teams played to a 1-1-1 record across the three-game set. Saint Anselm opened with a 5-3 victory on Dec. 6, 2019 before playing to a tie on Jan. 28, 2020. The series concluded on Feb. 8, 2020 with a 4-1 win by the Greyhounds.
  • From Dec. 7, 1999 to Dec. 3, 2014, Saint Anselm won 19 consecutive contests over Assumption.
  • Three of the last five contests have gone to overtime, resulting in a win for the Hawks and two ties. In the stretch, Saint Anselm is 2-1-2.
