PREVIEW: No. 8 field hockey returns home to face Bentley

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team welcomes Bentley University to campus on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest at Grappone Stadium.

Saint Anselm is coming off a convincing 5-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State, moving the team's record to 5-2 overall and to 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Bentley has won two straight games to improve to 5-3 and to 3-1 versus NE10 foes.

The Hawks play each of their next two games at home, battling Bentley on Wednesday before hosting Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday for yet another NE10 fixture. Saint Anselm has a quick turn-around for Monday, Oct. 4, traveling to Adelphi to make up a previously postponed game from earlier in the year.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm recorded a 5-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday. The Hawks held the overwhelming 21-to-2 advantage in shots taken and utilized a three-goal second quarter to push past the Owls.
  • Junior Maeve Murphy (Scituate, Mass.) cashed in on a breakaway before senior Sarah Bagley (North Andover, Mass.) reached a new single-season high for goal scoring (three), pushing home a rebound just four minutes later. Senior Emilie Martin (Yarmouth, Maine) concluded the first half scoring for Saint Anselm, creating a 3-0 lead at the break following a penalty corner.
  • With goals on Saturday, Murphy (five), Bagley (three) and Martin (three) each reached career-high marks for single-season goal scoring.
  • Saint Anselm netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) picked up another clean sheet, making two saves against the Owls without conceding a goal.
  • Senior Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) became the ninth student-athlete in team history to reach 50 career points, scoring against Saint Michael's on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Since joining the team in 2018, she has struck for 21 goals and added eight assists for 50 points (21-8=50). She needs just three points to jump all the way up to seventh place in team annals.
  • LaCasse has scored seven game-winning goals in her career, ranking third all-time behind Allia Connolly '18 and Michelle Lemelin '20 who each scored 10 in their careers.

FALCONS FAST FACTS

  • Last time out, Bentley doubled up the Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College by a 4-2 margin. Down by a 1-0 margin after the first 15 minutes, Bentley rattled off the game's next four goals on the way to victory.
  • Bentley has been awarded double-digit penalty corners in four of their team's eight games so far this season. Against Assumption on Sept. 8 in a four-goal loss, Bentley was awarded a season-high 19 penalty corners.
  • Sophomore Katie Thies leads the way with four goals and an assist for nine points (4-1=9) with junior Ava Bevilacqua checking in with three goals and two assists for eight points (3-2=8). The goalkeeping tandem of Madison Clark and Mia Trottie has allowed 17 goals in eight games, posting a .767 save percentage.
  • Bentley finished its 2019 season with a 9-10 overall record and a 7-7 mark in regular-season conference play. The Falcons fell to Southern New Hampshire in double-overtime to open the NE10 playoffs.

ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY

  • Saint Anselm has won each of the last six games over Bentley dating back to Oct. 7, 2015. The Hawks still trail the all-time series by a 19-8 margin, having lost each of the first 16 meetings against Bentley since Sept. 20, 2001.
  • The largest margin of victory in the all-time series for Saint Anselm was five goals in a shutout of the Falcons on Sept. 18, 2019.
  • Bentley has scored just one goal against Saint Anselm across the last six games.
