MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team downed New Haven, 4-0, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
The regionally-ranked Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season with a 2-1 mark in NE10 matches. The Chargers drop their fourth consecutive contest and fall to 3-4 with an 0-4 record in conference play.
The Hawks mounted the pressure early and dominated the possession battle, registering four corner kicks in the first six minutes. Sophomore
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) found space behind the Chargers backline and fired a shot onto
Paige Davis. Davis cut down the angle and made the save in the 12th minute.
Gotobed would not be denied on her next opportunity, however. In the 14th minute, Freshman
Allison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) collected a loose ball in the Hawks defensive half. She found classmate
Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) on the right sideline. Wnek quickly surveyed and found Gotobed who drove straight to goal and buried her second goal of the season into the bottom-right corner.
The duo of Wnek and Gotobed did not wait long to strike again as freshman
Riley Digilio (Danvers, Mass.) found Wnek down the right sideline again. Wnek drove to the corner and set the edge near the end line. She sent a pass toward the middle of the box where Gotobed was waiting to quickly one-time the play into the back of the net to double the Hawks lead in the 18th minute.
The Chargers fell to some misfortune in the 21st minute as the Hawks pressured the Chargers goal. Senior
Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.) sent a ball toward the right post. A defender attempted to clear the ball but redirected the ball into the net to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
New Haven regained some momentum late the first half as
Madison Blonde fired a shot from just inside the box on senior goalkeeper
Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.). Macaluso scooped up the shot and preserved the Hawks lead.
Junior
Grace Foley (Middleton, Mass.) added a fourth goal for the Hawks in the 75th minute as freshman
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) found Foley as she was cutting toward the goal. Foley quickly chipped the pass into the bottom right of the goal to make the score 4-0 on Foley's second of the season.
The Hawks out-shot the Chargers by a 29-7 margin including 16-1 in shots on goal. Saint Anselm registered 13 corner kicks to two for New Haven.
Macaluso earned the win, making one save. She improves to 4-1 on the season. Sophomore
Katie Taylor (Southampton, Mass.) made her collegiate debut in goal. The goalkeepers split time in the second half. Davis falls to 3-4 on the season after making 13 saves in the losing effort.
The Hawks head to Le Moyne on Saturday with the opening kick slated for 1 p.m.
