Women's soccer plays to scoreless tie against Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.

The Hawks are now 4-1-1 overall with a 2-1-1 record in NE10 action. The Dolphins go to 1-3-2 with a 0-2-2 mark in league matches. Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Saint Michael's for a 3 p.m. start.

"Another good performance from our side today. We created numerous opportunities but couldn't find the moments of quality needed to win. There is a weight of disappointment in the air that we were not able to come away with three points. That's a great sign for us and where we want to go." said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "Credit to Le Moyne, they are a difficult side to break down and they have no quit in them. They got us off schedule and were incredibly disruptive. They drew energy from such a large homecoming crowd and the atmosphere was awesome to play in. These challenges and adversities are exactly what we need to continue to improve."

Freshman Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) opened the match with a header shot that forced Allison Moreau to make a leaping save in the fourth minute. The Hawks kept the pressure on as a cross found senior Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.), but her shot sailed high.

Pecor had another great chance to score in the first half following a throw-in from Pratt. Pecor took the space that was given to her and fired a right-footed shot that forced Moreau to dive to her left to keep the scoreless tie in the 16th minute.

In the 31st minute, freshman Ceirra Merritt (Beverly, Mass.) launched a shot with her right foot that forced the Dolphins goalkeeper to make a diving save. The rebound found classmate Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.), but she could not get a shot on goal.

At the end of the first half, the Hawks held an 8-0 lead in shots, including 3-0 on goal.

Pecor and junior Grace Foley (Middleton, Mass.) posted shots on goal in the first 11 minutes of the second half. The best opportunity to take the lead came on a shot from sophomore Cricket Good (Newburyport, Mass.) as she worked her way inside the 18-yard box and produced a shot to the lower-left of the goal. Moreau scooped the bouncing shot.

The teams headeded to the first overtime period with a 15-1 shot advantage for the Hawks.

In the first extra frame, neither team gained an advantage as just one shot was posted in the 10-minute period. The Hawks recorded all five shots in the second overtime period, placing two on goal, but none would go in. Freshman Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) had the best chance to score in the second overtime as she worked to her left and booted a left-footed shot that spun its way back to Moreau. That would end up being the last great scoring chance for either team in the match.

The Hawks totaled 21 shots in the game, including nine on goal to just one for the Dolphins. Saint Anselm also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) did not face a shot on goal in the tie. She is now 4-1-1 on the season. Moreau made nine saves and now is 1-3-2 on the season.
