GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – A goal in the 95th minute from sophomore
Delaney Glode (Kennebunkport, Maine) gave the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday.
The Hawks improve to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in NE10 conference play while the Panthers fall to 1-2-1 with a 1-2 mark in the league.
This marks the first victory for Saint Anselm over Adelphi since Oct. 3, 2009, ending a six-match win streak in the all-time series for the Panthers. It is also the first time the Hawks have won at Adelphi.
"Proud of the team today. It's our most complete performance to date. Adelphi has historically proven to be an incredibly difficult place to get a result." said head coach
Joel Bancroft. "This year was no different. Credit to this team and their mindset. Resiliency and execution won the day."
In overtime, Saint Anselm was awarded a corner kick which was taken by sophomore
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.). From the right corner, Gotobed sent a service into the box for Glode, who converted for her first career goal.
The Hawks had a flurry of chances early in the match as freshman
Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) fired a shot that was saved by
Krista Alicio in the 15th minute. Wnek registered another shot that was blocked and Glode fired a shot wide on the ensuing corner kick.
Saint Anselm held a 7-2 shots and a 3-0 on goal advantage while drawing four corner kicks in the opening half.
In the first 16 minutes of the second half, Saint Anselm had six shots with two of them on goal.
Sarah Hofmeier kept the Hawks off the board during the opening rush.
Gotobed, sophomore
Lily LaGrassa (Middleton, Mass.), and freshman
Ceirra Merritt (Beverly, Mass.) were responsible for the four shots on goal in the second half.
Before the game-winning tally, Adelphi pushed the pace to open overtime as
Carly Issing registered two shots, however neither tested junior
Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.).
The Hawks out-shot the Panthers, 19-7 and held an 8-3 margin in shots on goal. Saint Anselm drew eight corner kicks to just two for Adelphi.
Macaluso made three saves in the shutout, improving to 3-1 on the season. Alicio was credited with two saves before departing after just over 20 minutes of action. Hofmeier made five saves on six shots on goal, falling to 0-2.
The Hawks have a quick turnaround as New Haven comes to the Hilltop on Tuesday, Sept. 21. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
