PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory over the host Panthers from Plymouth State University on Thursday.
The Hawks improve to 1-2 on the season while the Panthers dip to 2-1 on the season. Saint Anselm has won 22 of the 29 matches in the all-time series that dates back to Oct. 3, 1981.
Playing in the NCAA Division III scoring format of the hosts, the Hawks picked up three points by sweeping each of their doubles matches. The tandem of junior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) and freshman Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) got the match started in Saint Anselm's favor, locking down an 8-0 victory in No. 2 doubles action to open play.
The No. 1 pairing of senior Emily Jacy (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) battled to an 8-3 victory before freshmen Elle Doucette (Newburyport, Mass.) and Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) locked down an 8-2 win to put the Hawks up by a 3-0 score. The Svor sisters joined Doucette in earning their first collegiate victories on Thursday.
Kapothanasis and Jacy picked up swift victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, by scores of 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1. Julia Svor logged a decisive 6-1, 6-1 result at No. 3 singles before Parzick battled her way to a three-set victory at No. 4 singles.
Doucette also logged a three-set victory at No. 5 singles. After dropping the opening set in a tie-breaker, she rallied to post a 6-7, 6-0, 10-4 victory. Freshman Julia Casaletto (Rowley, Mass.) competed in her first-ever singles match and earned a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Saint Anselm will take on Holy Cross this Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Derryfield School. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
