MANCHESTER, N.H. – Michael Sirois, the Head Athletic Trainer at Saint Anselm College, was presented with the 2021 Anselmian Leadership and Service Award late last week.
Conducted by the College's Staff Council and presented to Sirois by Dr. Joseph A. Favazza, President of the College, the award was created to honor outstanding Saint Anselm staff members who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership on campus and to the Benedictine values of attentive listening, community, discernment, stewardship, compassion, and humility. College staff members were encouraged to nominate colleagues who exemplify these traits in their daily work.
Entering his 17th academic year at Saint Anselm in 2021-22, Sirois was promoted to the position of Head Athletic Trainer prior to the 2013-14 academic year. He serves as the chief medical officer for Hawks athletics, overseeing all aspects of a robust sports medicine program that serves the 470-plus student-athletes and 17 intercollegiate teams on the Hilltop.
Sirois was honored with the award alongside Maura Marshall, the Director of Health Services – the duo worked closely in the last academic year to ensure student safety in the midst of a global pandemic. Their efforts, along with countless staff members in Health Services and Sports Medicine, allowed Saint Anselm to successfully complete an academic year in 2020-21 that was unlike any other in the College's history.
"Thank you to the Staff Council for acknowledging Mike and Maura for their committed efforts this past year to keep the campus safe," said Associate Director of Athletics Neil Duval. "Maura and Mike were a natural and ideal team that showed the Anselmian community what teamwork, humility and commitment to a common goal can achieve."
This past August, Sirois was voted by his peers to serve as the chairperson for the Northeast-10 Conference's Sports Medicine Council. Serving a two-year term, he worked alongside colleagues across the conference on a variety of initiatives, including the review, recommendation and promotion of policies related to student-athlete health, safety, and well-being through research, education, best practices, and collaboration with member schools and national governing bodies.
Sirois graduated Cum Laude from the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, with a degree in athletic training in 2002. A student-athlete for the Nor'Easters, Sirois went on to the University of Utah where he graduated in May of 2004 with a Master's degree in exercise physiology.
A certified athletic trainer (ATC), Sirois is also certified by the American Red Cross in CPR for the professional rescuer. Sirois is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Through the NASM, Sirois is a Performance Enhancement Specialist.
He is an active member of the NATA, the NASM and the College Athletic Trainers' Society.
