PREVIEW: No. 21 women’s lacrosse at Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team is set to take the road for the first time in the 2021 season, battling Stonehill College on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 11 a.m.

Saint Anselm, the No. 21-ranked team in NCAA Division II according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), has won seven consecutive games dating back to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. This year, the Hawks have earned a perfect 3-0 record with two of its wins coming in official Northeast-10 Conference contests.

Stonehill owns a 2-3 record after falling to Bentley on Wednesday, Apr. 7 (11-9) and earning a 10-9 victory over Assumption University on Saturday, Apr. 3. The Skyhawks earned their first triumph of the season against Southern New Hampshire University, 21-5.

Stonehill will be limiting 250 fans at W.B. Mason Stadium, which includes students, faculty, and staff. No other spectators (i.e. student-athlete family members and friends, fans who are not Stonehill College students), will be allowed to attend outdoor collegiate sporting events held at Stonehill College until further notice. HAWKS NOTES
  • Last time out, Saint Anselm defeated the Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College, 14-4, on Wednesday, Apr. 7. The Hawks were led by a seven-point performance from senior Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) who posted two goals and five assists to give her 83 helpers in her career.
  • So far this season, Richards has scored three goals and dished out a team-high 16 assists for 19 points. Senior Kelsey Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) netted a hat trick in the Hawks victory over Saint Michael's, adding to her goal total of nine.
  • Junior captain Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) have each posted seven points with Ferullo scoring five goals against American International College on Mar. 20.
  • After starting in all three games in net, junior Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) owns a perfect 3-0 record, stopping 19 shots and recording a NE10-best 4.33 goals-against average across 180 minutes. Her 4.33 goals-against average is second in NCAA Division II, right behind Cassidy King's 4.15 GAA at the University of Indianapolis.
  • The Hawks are currently the national leader in ground balls per game with 26.67 as Czarnota leads the team with and average of nine per game. Saint Anselm is also the second-best scoring defense, holding its opponents to a 4.33 goals-against average mark.
  • Saint Anselm leads the entire nation in caused turnovers per game with 16.17.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
  • Stonehill is led by Bailey Grant who was recently named NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week and IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week. She backed the Stonehill defensive effort in a 10-9 triumph over Assumption. Grant posted a season-high 14 saves to preserve the Skyhawks win, chipping in with a career and team-high seven ground balls.
  • Offensively, Shannon Hughes leads the team with 22 points (17-5=22) on 17 goals and five assists, including scoring five on free position attempts. Emma Sullivan ranks second on the team for points with 15 (12-3=15), rounding out the Skyhawks with double digit goals. Sullivan has also recorded a team-high 32 draw controls.
  • Lindsay Duggans helps Grant out on defense, causing six turnovers on the season.
  • Stonehill ended last season with a 2-2 record, defeating Franklin Pierce and Saint Thomas Aquinas.
ALL-TIME vs. STONEHILL
  • Stonehill leads the all-time series by a 21-3 margin, despite the Hawks claiming their three victories in the past six matchups. The Hawks earned their first win over the Skyhawks by a 16-13 score in 2014.
  • The Hawks and Skyhawks last meeting came back in Apr. 16, 2019 when four Hawks student-athletes scored hat tricks en route to a 14-10 victory.
