PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey closes 2021 at Franklin Pierce

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team plays its final game of the 2021 calendar year at Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The Northeast-10 Conference tilt is slated for a 7:30 p.m. opening puck drop.

The Hawks suffered a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Huskies from the University of Southern Maine on Dec. 10. After starting the season unbeaten through its first five games (4-0-1), Saint Anselm has fallen in each of its last four contests.

The Ravens captured a 5-3 win over Johnson & Wales on Dec. 11. Franklin Pierce is winners in three of its last four games, grabbing wins over Framingham State and Arcadia on Nov. 23 and Nov. 26. The team is now 3-8-0 on the season.

Fans attending the game at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena are expected to familiarize themselves with the Franklin Pierce University spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • During the four-game skid, the Hawks have dropped a pair of contests by a 6-4 score to Southern New Hampshire and Southern Maine. They also fell to Anna Maria, 5-2, and NCAA Division I Long Island University, 4-0.
  • Sophomore Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.), freshman Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.), junior Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.), and sophomore Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) found the back of the net for the Hawks in the loss to Southern Maine. The defensive pairing of Blaney and Leach both netted their first collegiate goals in the third period.
  • Schwartz ranks second on the team with five goals on the season, following junior alternate captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) who has a team-high six tallies on the season.
  • Seven student-athletes recorded an assist against the Huskies. Schwartz and Christensen finished the contest with two points (1g, 1a) while senior Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) recorded two assists.
  • Ouellette is tied with junior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) and senior co-captain Trevor Hott (Idaho Falls, Idaho) with five helpers each. All three are chasing senior co-captain Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) who has six on the season.
  • Junior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) has started all nine games for Saint Anselm. He has a 3.01 goals-against average and a .901-save percentage. He stopped 24 Huskies shots on goal including 10 in the final 20 minutes of play before the Hawks opted to play with the extra skater in the final minutes.
  • Saint Anselm has lit the lamp 27 times this season, averaging 3.0 goals per game. The Hawks have found the back of the net four times in 38 power play opportunities, converting at 10.5%. The team is killing penalties 77.3% of the time, committing 44 penalties and allowing 10 goals in those scenarios.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • Franklin Pierce dropped its first seven contests to open the season before capturing a 6-2 win over Framingham State on Nov. 23. The Ravens have won three of their last four games including a 5-3 win over Johnson & Wales in their last contest.
  • Ryan Gorbett leads the team in scoring with six goals. Gorbett scored all six of goals in a five-game stretch from Nov. 6 to Nov. 19. Dom Norris and Cody Rumsey are tied for second on the squad with four goals each. Rumsey netted a hattrick in the win over Johnson & Wales.
  • Conor Foley has six assists to lead the team while Rumsey and Chris Stevenson have assisted on five goals each, sitting in second on the team in helpers.
  • Franklin Pierce has had three student-athletes start in net. Ian Wallace has started five games and holds a .912-save percentage and a 3.32 goals-against average. Kyle Martin and Adam Carman have drawn three starts each. Martin has a 3.06-goals against and a .866 save percentage with a 1-2 record while Carman is 2-1 with a 3.55-goals against and a .890-save percentage.
  • The Ravens have netted 28 goals this season with seven of them coming on 53 power play opportunities, converting at 13.2%. The team is killing penalties at 71.2%, allowing 15 goals on 52 times shorthanded.
ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • This marks the 26th meeting in the all-time series as Saint Anselm is 22-3-0 against Franklin Pierce.
  • The Hawks won the first 19 meetings, spanning from January 6, 2003 to Nov. 6, 2018. Since then, each program has a captured three wins.
  • Franklin Pierce won the last contest by a 4-2 score on Feb. 15, 2020, winning the three game set in the 2019-20 season by a two games to one margin.
