PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey to face Castleton, Worcester State

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team makes its first road trip of the season, heading to Castleton University on Friday, Nov. 5 and Worcester State University on Saturday, Nov. 6.

The Hawks opened the 2021-22 season with a 4-1 over Rivier University on Oct. 30, marking the first win over Rivier in program history. Rivier is in its first season playing at the NCAA level. This is the first season-opening win for the Hawks since the 2105-16 team won its season debut. After the weekend road trip, Saint Anselm hosts Stonehill on Friday, Nov. 12 in its Northeast-10 Conference opener.

The Spartans split their opening-weekend series, downing the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Oct. 29 before falling to Plattsburgh State on Oct. 30 by an 8-1 score. After hosting the Hawks and traveling to SUNY Canton, the Spartans open New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play by hosting New England College on Friday, Nov. 12.

The Lancers dropped both of their contests in the Worcester Cup, falling to Nichols College on Oct. 29 before being tripped up by Assumption University in the consolation game on Oct. 31. Worcester State hosts UMass Dartmouth on Nov. 4 in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener before hosting Saint Anselm.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks offense powered in four goals against Rivier with goals from sophomore Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.), junior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.), junior Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.), and sophomore Thomas Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.). For Christensen and Schwartz, those are their first collegiate goals.
  • Junior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) was named the NE10 Goaltender of the Week for the second time in his career after stopping 24 of 25 shots on goal.
  • Senior Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.) is the team leader in points and assists with two. Senior Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Eleyn, Ill.), senior Sean Healy (Quincy, Mass.), and junior Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) all recorded assists for Saint Anselm in the season opening win.
  • The Hawks blocked 14 Rivier shots and went one-for-two on the power play while allowing five power play opportunities to the Raiders. Rivier had five opportunities with the extra-man but could not convert.
SCOUTING CASTLETON
  • The Spartans opened the season with a 4-2 win over Wentworth before falling to Plattsburgh by an 8-1 score.
  • Brandon Picard, Zach Papapetros, Connor Rider, Andrew Stefura, and Anton Tarvainen have recorded one goal each to bring the team total to five.
  • Justin Stairs leads the team with two assists and is tied with Picard for the team lead in points with two.
  • Kyle Alaverdy posted a 37-save win over Wentworth, allowing two goals in a full 60 minutes of action. Brandon Collett and Dominic Rodrigue split time against Plattsburgh with Collett suffering the loss.
  • The Spartans are zero-for-eight on the power play while allowing two power play goals in nine chances. The team has blocked 26 shots in front of its three goaltenders.
SCOUTING WORCESTER STATE
  • The Lancers fell in their season opener by a 6-5 score in the first round of the Worcester Cup before falling to a Hawks NE10 foe in Assumption, 6-3.
  • Brian Clougherty and Bridgham Neuhold are tied for the team lead with two goals each while four other Lancers have lit the lamp in the two games.
  • Kevin Drevitch and Deiter Stange have recorded three helpers each, which is tied for tops on the squad. Nick Pennucci and Max Tucker have one goal and one assist each for two points.
  • Wyatt Friedlander and Nevin Tardif have drawn one start each. Friedlander made 30 saves in the loss to Nichols while Tardif posted 35 stops against Assumption.
  • The Lancers have recorded one power play goal in six opportunities. They allowed one goal in 10 shorthanded chances.
ALL-TIME vs. CASTLETON
  • This will be the 21st meeting all-time between the Hawks and Spartans. Castleton is 10-7-3 against Saint Anselm.
  • The two programs have not met since Jan. 14, 2017 which was a 3-2 in overtime for the Spartans. Castleton has won each of the last three meetings and are winners in seven of the last nine contests.
ALL-TIME vs. WORCESTER STATE
  • Saint Anselm is 5-3 all-time against Worcester State as this marks the ninth meeting in the all-time series.
  • This is the fourth consecutive season that the programs will meet as the Hawks recorded a 4-2 win on Nov. 2, 2019.
  • Saint Anselm and Worcester State played four times in the 1970's. Saint Anselm was 3-1 during that time. There was a meeting on Dec. 28, 2001 which extended the Saint Anselm win streak to four. In the most recent three games, the Lancers are 2-1.
