PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey to face NCAA Division I LIU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team hosts NCAA Division I Long Island University in its final home contest of the fall semester on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The Hawks suffered a pair of losses over the weekend, falling to Southern New Hampshire University on Nov. 19 by a 6-4 score before dropping a home non-conference game to Anna Maria College, 5-2. Saint Anselm is now 4-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. This contest is the final home contest for the Hawks until Friday, Jan. 28, marking 12 consecutive games away from Sullivan Arena.

The Sharks skated to a 7-2 loss and 2-2 tie with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Nov. 19 and Nov. 20, falling to 2-7-3 on the season. LIU, a first-year NCAA Division I program, is winless in its last seven contests but has played to three ties in the stretch. After coming to the Hilltop, the Sharks head to Miami (Ohio) University for a pair of contests on Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks battled back from a pair of three goal deficits (3-0, 4-1) in Friday's 6-4 loss to SNHU. Four different student-athletes found the back of the net for Saint Anselm. In Saturday's non-conference contest, the Hawks held a 2-1 lead through two periods but a pair of first minute strikes by the AMCATS propelled them to the 5-2 win. Juniors Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) and Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) netted goals for Saint Anselm.
  • Andary is leading the team with six goals on the season and has lit the lamp in five of seven games this season. Sophomore Thomas Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) is second on the squad with four goals. 12 student-athletes are responsible for the Hawks 23 goals this season, who are averaging 3.3 goals per game.
  • Hayes and senior co-captain Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) are tied for fifth in the NE10 with five assists each. Senior co-captain Trevor Hott (Idaho Falls, Idaho) has four assists on the season which ranks third on the team.
  • Junior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) has started all seven contests for Saint Anselm. He has a 2.56 goals against average and a .910 save percentage, both rank inside the top five when compared to conference foes.
  • In special teams' scenarios this season, Saint Anselm is converting on the power play at 10.7% (3-28) while killing off penalties at 73.5% (9-34). The Hawks have won 262 of 462 faceoffs which is a 56.7%-win rate.
SCOUTING LIU
  • The Sharks opened the season with losses to Penn State University and Notre Dame before collecting back-to-back wins over Assumption University and Post University. Since then, LIU is winless in its last seven contests, playing to three ties during the stretch.
  • Jordan Timmons leads the Sharks with six goals while Billy Jerry and Spencer Cox are tied for second with four goals each. LIU has netted 31 goals through 12 games, averaging 2.6 goals per game.
  • Jerry and Jake Stevens are tied for the team lead in assists with seven helpers each. Jerry is the team leader in points with 11. Jordan Di Cicco has five helpers to rank third on the squad.
  • Kris Carlson has started in nine games in goal for LIU. He has a 3.51 goals against average and a .881 save percentage. Carlson has made 222 saves on 252 shots on goal.
  • On the season, the Sharks are converting at a 16.7% (10-60) on the power play while killing penalties at a rate of 71.9% (16-57). The team has won 350 of 710 faceoffs, good for a 49.3%.
ALL-TIME vs. LIU
  • This will be the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
  • Saint Anselm is 85-119-5 against current NCAA Division I opponents. The Hawks have competed against 17 programs who presently play at the Division I level.
  • The last time Saint Anselm met a current Division I opponent was Bentley on Dec. 8, 1998 which was a 3-2 overtime loss to the Falcons.
