MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team dropped its Saturday evening non-conference contest to Anna Maria College, 5-2.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-2-1 on the season while the AMCATS improve to 2-4-2 on the year. Saint Anselm hosts NCAA Division I Long Island University on Tuesday, Nov. 23, marking their final home game of the semester and until Friday, Jan. 28.
Junior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) notched a goal and an assist to lead the Hawks with two points. Junior
Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) registered the other Hawks goal while freshman
Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) and senior
Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) joined Hayes with assists.
The AMCATS struck first as
Sam Cyr-Ledoux fired a slap shot from the top right circle and while on the way to the net, deflected off a Hawks defender and into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead at 5:47 of the first period.
Saint Anselm responded with a deflection goal of its own at 15:51 as Hayes collected a pass from Mix and sent a wrist shot on goal that hit a AMCATS defender and bounced by goaltender
Julius Huset.
Andary gave the Hawks a 2-1 advantage after Hayes won a faceoff from the right faceoff dot to the junior alternate captain. Andary collected the puck and forced his way to the slot where he snapped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal at 11:25 of the second period.
Anna Maria came out of the second intermission and struck twice within the first minute of the final stanza.
Michael Padgeon netted a power play goal on a cross-crease pass.
Matthew Byrne was the recipient of a pass from
Samuel Gaudreau who forced an offensive zone turnover, deep in the AMCATS attacking end.
Jac Sitzman added a pair of goals at 10:16 and 16:47 to give Anna Maria insurance, ultimately taking the contest by a 5-2 score.
The Hawks sent 37 shots on goal compared to 30 for the AMCATS. Anna Maria capitalized on two of its three power play chances while Saint Anselm did not convert on its three opportunities.
Junior
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) made 25 saves in the losing effort while Huset halted 35 shots, including 15-of-16 in the second period.
