Men's ice hockey blanked by NCAA Division I LIU, 4-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team was blanked by NCAA Division I Long Island University in non-conference action by a 4-0 score on Tuesday.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-3-1 on the season while the Sharks improve to 3-7-3. Saint Anselm plays the host of the SUNY Canton Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 27 with the opening puck drop against the Roos scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

LIU struck first at the 11:14 mark of the opening period as Spencer Cox fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle off the right post and into the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge.

The Sharks added to their lead just 1:09 into the second stanza as Tyler Welsh forced a turnover deep in the Hawks defensive end. He quickly sent a pass to Nolan Welsh who snapped home the play over the left should of Hawks junior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.).

Billy Jerry notched the second LIU tally of the second period, this one coming 9:20 into the frame. Jerry collected a pass from Cox and sent a wrist shot on goal. Howard got a piece of the shot, but not enough as the puck slowly crossed the goal line.

The Sharks added an insurance goal as Nolan Welsh netted his second goal of the game on a cross-crease pass from Zach Nazzarett.

The best chance for the Hawks to light the lamp came in the final minutes as sophomore Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) forced a turnover in the Hawks attacking end. He went one-on-one with Sharks netminder Vinnie Purpura but his shot attempt was fired right at the goaltender.

LIU sent 44 shots on goal while Saint Anselm managed 17 shots of frame. Neither team converted on their power play opportunities as the Sharks were 0-2 while the Hawks were 0-3.

Howard made 40 saves in the losing effort while Purpura stopped all 17 Hawks shots.
