PREVIEW: Women's basketball to face Dominican (N.Y.), Caldwell

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team hits the road to participate in the eighth annual Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament, hosted by Dominican (N.Y.) College on Friday and Saturday.

Saint Anselm (2-1), the No. 18-ranked team in the D2SIDA Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll, will take on the host Chargers at 4 p.m. on Friday before battling Caldwell University at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Chargers open with a 3-0 record while Caldwell sees its overall record stand at 2-1 entering the two-game series in Orangeburg.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm suffered a 67-60 setback to Bentley University in its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Wednesday evening.
  • Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the Hawks offense with 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, capping off her 11th career double-double and the first of her season.
  • Sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) chipped in 12 points and one steal. Junior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) added nine points, three assists, and two rebounds while junior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) led Saint Anselm with five assists.
  • Bentley held a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Falcons outscored the Hawks by a 12-4 margin over the final 6:25 of the first 10 minutes of play. The Hawks would eventually take their largest lead at 42-36 in the third quarter, but Bentley finished the game on a 31-18 scoring run that stunned Saint Anselm in its home opener. In that span, Bentley was 11-for-19 from the floor.
  • Turco was named Rookie of the Week by the Northeast-10 Conference on Monday. She made her collegiate debut in the first Saint Anselm games in 614 days last week as Saint Anselm downed not only the NCAA Division II East Region runner-up team from 2021 in Roberts Wesleyan, but opened the season with a 75-70 win over Daemen, who claimed last season's regional title.
  • In her collegiate debut on Thursday against the Wildcats, Turco scored 19 points with four steals, four assists and two rebounds. In a 63-59 overtime victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Friday, Turco tied for the team lead in point scoring (17) and added three steals and two rebounds in 43 minutes.

DOMINICAN (N.Y.) DETAILS

  • The Chargers are 3-0 on the season, defeating Mercy (N.Y.), St. Thomas Aquinas and Southern Connecticut State to date. The win against the Owls, a member of the NE10 alongside Saint Anselm, was by a six-point margin in the Chargers' home opener on Wednesday.
  • Dominican, an NCAA tournament team in 2020-21, was picked to top the North Division of the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) prior to the start of the season. The Chargers fell to Roberts Wesleyan, the East Region runner-up team, by a 77-73 margin in double overtime on Saturday, Mar. 13.
  • Alexis Suarez is her team's leading scorer through three games, averaging 16 points per game, while Khay'la Latimer is second with 15 points per contest. Taylor Tomlinson rounds out the double-digit point scorers with 14.7 to her credit.
  • Dominican has shot between 45.6% and 49.2% in each of its four games, displaying remarkable consistency from the floor. The team is capable of converting from distance, making at least four three-point baskets in each of their four games and logging totals of five, seven and nine along the way.

PREVIEWING THE COUGARS

  • Caldwell enters play with a 2-1 record, falling to the District of Columbia in the opener on Saturday, Nov. 13 before taking down Bridgeport, 75-58, and Saint Thomas Aquinas by a 63-42 margin this past Wednesday. The team has played three consecutive home games to date, heading to the road for the first time.
  • The Cougars were selected to finish third in the North Division of the CACC in the preseason coaches' poll. The team logged a 3-7 overall record in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign, falling to Concordia (N.Y.) in the CACC Quarterfinals to end the year.
  • Caldwell returns CACC All-Conference performers Paula Dits, who led the team with 14.2 points and exactly five rebounds per game last season. This season, she is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, tied for the team lead with 14.3 points per game and 10.7 rebounds.
  • Casey O'Shaughnessy posted 30 points, a career-high mark, earlier this season to place herself tied with Dits for the team lead in point scoring. She opened with seven points against the District of Columbia before scoring six points last time out against St. Thomas Aquinas.

ALL-TIME vs. DOMINICAN (N.Y.), CALDWELL

  • Saint Anselm is 4-2 all-time against Dominican, winning the last three match-ups. Most recently, Saint Anselm took down the Chargers by a convincing 88-51 score on Nov. 9, 2018. Prior to that game, the teams met in five contests from 2006-07 through the 2011-12 campaign.
  • Saint Anselm is 0-2 against Caldwell, taking on the Cougars in two neutral-site contests in team history. Both teams, separated by nearly 10 years, ended up with the Hawks taking double-digit losses. The last meeting was a 67-54 defeat on Nov. 11, 2017.
