PREVIEW: Women's basketball to open 2021-22 season in central New York

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team opens its 2021-22 season on Friday, Nov. 12 as it travels to Roberts Wesleyan College for back-to-back games.

The Hawks will face-off against the Wildcats from Daemen College on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on the host Redhawks from Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. Both contests will be played at the Voller Athletic Center.

Saint Anselm returns to intercollegiate play for the first time since falling in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game played on Sunday, Mar. 8, 2020. The Hawks went on to earn an at-large bid to the canceled NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship, the program's ninth trip to the NCAA's.

Daemen claimed the 2021 NCAA Division II East Region Championship on Mar. 15, 2021, downing Roberts Wesleyan in the final game of the eight-team regional. The Redhawks finished with an overall record of 12-7 while Daemen racked up 14 wins in its 17 games played. Saint Anselm enters the game with championship experience, winning its first East Region title in 2019.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • 614 days ago, Saint Anselm made its first NE10 title game appearance in 22 seasons, falling to Stonehill by an 80-61 margin. In the NE10 Semifinals, Saint Anselm turned away the No. 8-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Adelphi, to earn a spot in the league championship.
  • At the time of the season's cancellation in 2019-20, the Hawks ranked atop the NE10 in several statistical categories, including rebounds per game (43.86), rebound margin (9.9) and defensive rebounds per game (30.4). The Hawks were second in the NE10 in field goal percentage (.438), scoring offense (73.2) and free throws made (366).
  • Saint Anselm returns just two of its five starters from the last game played, but a total of six student-athletes on the present roster saw the floor in the 2020 NE10 Championship game. Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.), a long-time fixture in the Hawks lineup, returns to the program for her fourth season of on-court action.
  • Steinman earned First Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference honors in 2020, averaging 19.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while reaching double-digits in point scoring across all 28 games played. She led the Hawks with 102 assists while ranking second with 56 steals, shooting just shy of 50% from the floor (183-for-370, 49.5%).
  • Spinks burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2019-20, finishing the year with 6.2 points per game while handing out 86 assists to rank third on the team. Earning All-Rookie Team placement from the NE10, Spinks was seventh in the conference with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.48 and was 14th in the league with 86 assists and 3.1 helpers per game.
  • Jenoyce Laniyan saw action in a career-high 28 games for the Hawks, all in a reserve capacity. She was a key part of the Hawks run to the NE10 Championship game, scoring a season-high 12 points against New Haven in the NE10 Quarterfinals on Mar. 1, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor with two blocked shots. She has played in 61 career games for Saint Anselm since debuting in 2017.
  • Junior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) also appeared in 28 contests for Saint Anselm, averaging just shy of two points per game off the bench. Senior Stephanie Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) reached a career-high in 2019-20 with 13 games played and junior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) came off the bench in 12 games as a freshman.
  • Saint Anselm is led by Head Coach Corey Boilard, who enters his fifth year on the Hilltop. The owner of a 60-29 (.674) overall record since joining the Hawks prior to the 2017-18 season, Boilard has won an impressive 144 games as a collegiate head coach between Saint Anselm and Johnson & Wales (R.I.). The Hawks have won no less than 17 games in a season during his tenure.

THE DAEMEN REPORT

  • Daemen enters the game after posting a 98-43 loss against NCAA Division I Buffalo on Nov. 4.
  • The Wildcats are the reigning NCAA Division II East Region Championship winners, defeating Roberts Wesleyan by a convincing 58-40 margin in the title game. Daemen went on to fall to top-seeded Lubbock Christian, 66-49 – the Lady Chaps went on to win the NCAA Division II Championship.
  • The Wildcats feature Katie Titus, a senior forward who was named the East Coast Conference's Preseason Player of the Year. She poured home 14.8 points per game in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign and also contributed with 8.1 rebounds per contest.
  • Tiara Filbert is a three-time All-ECC selection who was named ECC Preseason Player of the Year in 2020-21. She played just eight games last season but has averaged 11.8 points per game in a career that has spanned 93 games.
  • Jenepher Banker begins her sixth season as the Head Coach at Daemen and has racked up 78 wins across those campaigns. She has led Daemen to back-to-back ECC regular-season titles, a postseason league championship and two NCAA Division II playoff berths.

SCOUTING ROBERTS WESLEYAN

  • Roberts Wesleyan posted a 12-7 overall record last season, winning nine games in a row when it counted to collect a spot in the East Region Championship game against Daemen. Before the winning streak, the team was stuck with a 3-6 overall record.
  • The Redhawks won their first ECC Championship, defeating Daemen by a 59-53 score on Mar. 6. Prior to the upset, the Wildcats claimed victory in seven consecutive games.
  • Roberts Wesleyan is led by Taryn Wilson, who was named Most Valuable Player of last season's East Coast Conference Tournament. She averaged 11.5 points and exactly five-and-a-half rebounds to rank third on the team in point production.
  • Dimitra Gkizani is the team's leading returner in terms of scoring, logging 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest on the way to First Team All-ECC honors.
  • Roberts Wesleyan is led by Kevin Clifford, who became the Head Coach of the program in 2018. He enters the weekend with exactly 150 coaching victories after leading teams from the City College of New York, Mount Saint Vincent and Buffalo State.

ALL-TIME vs. DAEMEN, ROBERTS WESLEYAN

  • Saint Anselm is 3-0 in the all-time series against Daemen. The Hawks are 2-1 versus Roberts Wesleyan since the first meeting on Dec. 18, 2016.
  • The Hawks have taken down Daemen in three consecutive meetings, winning by 77-69 margin on Dec. 19, 2016 and a 69-56 score on Dec. 29, 2017 in Manchester, N.H. Most recently, Saint Anselm got past the Wildcats by a 64-56 margin on Jan. 3, 2019.
  • The one loss to Roberts Wesleyan came in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Dec. 30, 2017. The Redhawks posted a convincing 82-68 win over Saint Anselm.
