ALBANY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, 2-0.
The Hawks fall to 4-6 on the season with a 2-5 record in NE10 contests. Saint Rose improves to 4-4-2 overall with a 3-2-1 record in league matches. The Hawks take a break from conference play to conclude their non-conference schedule at St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Saint Rose tested junior goaltender
Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) early as
Hilmar Halldorsson fired a shot on Underhill that was saved just 16 seconds into play. Halldorsson, in the fourth minute, found free space inside the 18-yard box and sent a right footed shot to the left side of the goal but it bounced off the post.
The Hawks nearly found the first goal of the match as junior
Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo) sent a pass forward for classmate
Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.). Bukunt managed to beat the Golden Knights goalkeeper
Tomas Rozman, but the play was blown dead on an offside call.
The Golden Knights found the back of the net in the 36th minute.
Oskar Aastroem sent a service forward for
Josh Elliot just outside the box. Elliot touched the service down to his right and fired a shot into the upper right of the goal. Underhill managed to get a piece of the shot but not all of it, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
In the 40th minute, the Hawks had their best chance to tie the match as Assantha forced a turnover following pressure on Rozman by freshman
Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.). Assantha fired a shot from the left side of the box and beat an attacking Rozman. However,
Nick Koenig made a sliding save to prevent the goal.
Saint Anselm opened the second half with a flurry of shots starting with a point-blank save on Bukunt in the 50th minute. The rebound found junior
Kevin Jordan (Danvers, Mass.) but his shot was saved as well. Continuing the offensive attack, Bukunt had a free-kick from about 25 yards out that was turned aside.
The Golden Knights added their second goal of the match in the 64th minute as
Simon Schouby sent a through ball to
Nico Faretta – he fired a shot that beat Underhill in the top-right of the goal.
The Hawks registered four shots from Assantha and Bukunt in the remainder of the contest but could not find the back of the net.
Underhill falls to 4-6 on the season after making two saves in the losing effort. Rozman stopped eight shots, improving to 2-0-2.
