SPARKILL, N.Y. – Freshman
Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.) scored his first career goal in the 89th minute as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team snapped its five-match losing streak at Saint Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday afternoon.
With the 2-1 win, the Hawks improve to 5-6 on the season while the Spartans fall to 7-3-1 overall. Saint Anselm returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday when Southern Connecticut State University comes to the Hilltop.
The Spartans struck in the fifth minute as
Jorge Umana managed to work his way from his own defensive half and down into the Hawks 18-yard box. He fired a shot into the bottom right of the goal, giving the hosts an early advantage on the first shot attempt of the contest.
Saint Anselm responded in the 22nd minute on the first career goal from junior
Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.). Freshman
Andrew Kubinski (Norton, Mass.) fired a shot on loose ball inside the Spartans' 18-yard box and Bukunt was there to redirect the attempt into the top part of the goal, tying the game at one.
Umana sent a corner kick to the middle of the box in the 32nd minute. The Hawks failed to clear the ball away and it found
Cole Allen, whose ensuing shot rang off the crossbar but stayed out of the goal, nearly giving the Spartans a 2-1 edge in the 31st minute.
Throughout the second half, the Spartans held an 8-5 shot advantage that included five shots on junior
Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.). Underhill kept Saint Thomas Aquinas off the scoreboard even with the scoring opportunities.
In the 89th minute, junior
Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.) sent a pass down the right sideline for sophomore
Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.). Verow drove in to the middle of the field and found senior
Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) who redirected a pass to the right side of the 18-yard box and found Leader who capped off the play with a one-touch right footed shot into the upper left of the goal.
Needing to find a goal to force overtime, Saint Thomas Aquinas fired a shot but senior
Jake Reynolds (Weare, N.H.) was there for the blcok and a sliding stop by Underhill would seal the win for the Hawks.
Saint Thomas Aquinas held a 15-9 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Spartans were awarded eight corner kicks to five for the Hawks.
Underhill made seven saves on eight shots on goal, improving to 5-6 on the season.
