Rodrigues registers first career goal in OT winner over SCSU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Vitor Rodrigues (Bedford, N.H.) notched his first collegiate goal in the 93rd minute, powering the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Senior Day win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 6-6 on the season with a 3-5 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Owls drop to 2-8-1 overall with a 2-5 mark in league matches. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday, when Le Moyne comes to the Hilltop for a 3:30 p.m. kick off.

Prior to the match, the Hawks honored four of their senior student-athletes, Chris Gallier (Savannah, Ga.), Jake Reynolds (Weare, N.H.), Patrick Sorensen (Sturbridge, Mass.), and Jordan Trombly (Manchester, N.H.).

Sorensen got the game-winning play started when he won a goal kick at midfield. His volley went forward to junior Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.), who headed the play toward the left side of the box where he found a streaking senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.).

Elliot won the race to the loose ball and evaded his defender down near the goal line. After cutting toward goal, he forced goalkeeper Andrey Carvalho to attack and attempt to close down the angle but Elliot sent a pass to the middle of the box for Rodrigues who one-timed the play into the back of the net, giving the Hawks a 1-0 win in their first overtime match of the season.

Earlier in the contest, Gallier had wide-open chance to give the Hawks the lead in the third minute following a corner kick to the far post. Gallier fired the shot out of midair but sent the shot over the crossbar.

Sophomore Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) had the best chance to score for the Hawks as Sorensen drove to the left side of the goal and sent a service to the middle of the 18-yard box for Verow. He re-directed the play toward the right post, beating Carvalho but Joshi Munoz stood on the goal line and kept the ball out of the net, recording a team save in the process.

The Hawks held a 7-5 edge in shots in the first half including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams registered one corner kick.

Saint Anselm had a chance to find the open goal in the 86th minute. The Hawks were awarded a corner kick following a shot over the goal by Bukunt. Junior Kevin Jordan (Danvers, Mass.) sent the corner into the middle of the box where Reynolds headed a shot that just carried high over the crossbar.

The Owls had a corner kick in the opening minute of the overtime period but could not convert on the opportunity.

The Hawks held a 17-15 advantage in shots with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm had six corner kicks to three for the Owls.

Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) posted his fourth shutout with four saves. He improves to 6-6 on the season. Carvalho suffered the loss in his first start this season. He made five saves in the losing effort.
