MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team was upended on Tuesday by visiting Le Moyne College, 1-0, at Melucci Field. The Dolphins scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
Saint Anselm falls to 6-7 overall on the year and to 3-6 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Le Moyne ups its record to 7-5 on the year and to 4-4 versus the league. The Hawks are winless in their last eight games against the Dolphins.
Le Moyne was carrying the ball toward the front of the goal and away from Hawks netminder Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.), but a Saint Anselm defender was whistled for a foul in the box. The official pointed to the spot where Jack Goodrich beat Underhill inside the right post for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
The Dolphins fired nine of the first half's 13 shots, but the Hawks played solid defense and limited to just three shots on net. Underhill was there for the save each time and made back-to-back saves within a 90-second span near the midpoint of the half.
The Hawks had a fantastic chance to score in the game's 75th minute, but junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) could not get a shot on target. It proved to be the final Saint Anselm shot attempt of the game as Le Moyne cashed in with the game-winning marker on the penalty kick with less than four minutes remaining in regulation time.
Underhill drew the loss, despite making six saves on seven shots. Josh Mahr made three stops for Le Moyne.
Fouls were 14-12 going against Le Moyne, who earned nine of the game's 13 penalty corners as well.
The Hawks have two tough opponents coming up on the schedule, including Adelphi this Saturday, Oct. 23 on the road at high noon. Saint Anselm is in search of its first postseason appearance since the 2009 season.
