Men's soccer blanked by Adelphi, 5-0

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to Adelphi in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-8 on the season with a 3-7 record in NE10 play while the Panthers, ranked fifth in the East Region by the United Soccer Coaches, improve to 9-3-1 overall and 8-1 in league matches, extending their current win streak to eight matches.

Rodrigo Rocca Descalzo got the Panthers on the board in the fifth minute as he fired a left-footed shot by junior netminder Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.).

The Hawks had a strong pair of chances to score as sophomore Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) and senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) forced saves by Daniel De La Heras.

Following the Saint Anselm scoring chances, Filippo Peri cleaned up a rebound chance to double the lead in the 15th minute. Francisco Greco fired a long shot on Underhill, forcing him to dive to his right, but the rebound slid out to the left side of the box for Peri to cap off the play into the empty goal.

Descalzo Rocca and Franco Paz rounded out the first-half goals for Adelphi as their tallies came just 3:53 apart. Decalzo Rocca scored his 13th goal of the season in the 34th minute and Paz found the back of the net shortly thereafter for his first goal on the year, giving the hosts a 4-0 lead heading to the intermission.

Descalzo Rocca capped off his hat trick in the 52nd minute, finishing with three goals on the day to bring his season total to 14.

Adelphi held a 15-11 edge in shots, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Saint Anselm was awarded seven corner kicks to just three for the Panthers.

Underhill falls to 6-8 on the season after making five saves on 10 shots on goal. De La Heras made three saves in the opening 45 minutes before Manuel Mirao stopped the lone shot on goal in the second half. De Le Heras improves to 8-0 on the year.

Saint Anselm hosts Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 27 in its final home match of the 2021 season.
