Men's soccer falls to Southern New Hampshire, 2-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire in the home finale for the Hawks.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-9 on the season with a 3-8 record in NE10 play. The fifth-ranked team in the East Region, according to United Soccer Coaches, Southern New Hampshire improves to 9-4-1 and 6-2-1 in conference play. Southern New Hampshire extends its unbeaten streak to 11 matches over Saint Anselm.

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Kwesi Allen won a contested loose ball just inside the 18-yard box. Allen managed to turn the corner and drove toward the net along the goal line. He attempted to send a ball to the middle of the box but it was deflected and found its way by junior goalkeeper Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.), giving the visitors a 1-0 edge.

The Penmen doubled their lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Michael Garcia. Nadjib Chibout sent a pass toward the penalty spot where Garcia was set up to redirect the play into the bottom-right corner of the net.

One of the Hawks best chances came just over two minutes after the second Southern New Hampshire goal as senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) jumped into the air and fired an shot that was turned aside by Jackson Rivers.

Elliot had another great chance late in the match as he took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box but his shot sailed high.

The Penmen fired 16 shots with eight of them on frame while the Hawks recorded 11 shots and five on goal. Southern New Hampshire held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Underhill stopped six of eight shots on goal in the losing effort while Rivers posted a five-save shutout.

The Hawks close the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Assumption. The opening kick is slated for 7 p.m.
