WORCESTER, Mass. – Needing a victory to keep the team's postseason hopes alive, the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with Assumption University on Wednesday evening.
With the draw, the Hawks season comes to a close with a 6-9-1 record overall and a 3-8-1 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Greyhounds also see their season end, moving to 3-11-2 overall and 3-8-1 in the NE10.
The Hawks registered the first scoring chance in the 17th minute as junior
Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) fired a shot from about 35 yards out, forcing
Tony Abdulky to make a leaping save to prevent an early lead for the Hawks. Bukunt fired another shot just a minute later that forced Abdulky to make a diving save.
Assumption struck first in the 22nd minute as
Jamison Magowan sent a left-footed cross to the right post where
Ruben Faria was there to head home the match's opening tally.
Junior
Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) tied the match with his fifth goal of the season in the 37th minute. Bukunt sent a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box and that found Assantha in the middle of the box who fired a low liner into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Both teams had strong chances to score down the stretch as Magowan found himself free inside the box and had a cross headed to him. However, Magowan misfired on the shot attempt and the ball rolled to the opposite corner. Freshman
Vitor Rodriguez (Bedford, N.H.) drove in on goal and fired a shot that just missed wide right in the 43rd minute, proving to be the last strong scoring chance for both teams in the first half.
Senior
Michael Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.) capitalized on free space in the box following a Greyhounds foul. Classmate
Chris Gallier (Savannah, Ga.) sent the free kick to the left side of the box where Fortin headed the play into the back of net to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute. Fortin scored his first career goal and Gallier earned his first assist of the season on the play.
The Greyhounds nearly tied the match at two as
Jake Moriarty clanged a shot off the crossbar in the 68th minute.
Assumption finally registered the equalizer in the 86th minute as Faria collected a throw-in and served the ball to the middle of the box for
Vanilton Xavier. Xavier headed the play into the left side of the goal, knotting the match at two.
Saint Anselm nearly had the game-winner in the final minute as a loose ball was inside the goalkeeper's six-yard box but the Greyhounds managed to clear the play away.
Junior goalkeeper
Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) made the biggest save of the season as
Christopher Lund put a quick shot on the goalkeeper stemming from a corner kick, forcing him to make a reactionary kick save in the 98th minute.
Kevin Hernandez forced another strong save from Underhill to force the second 10-minute overtime period, coming in the 100th minute.
Saint Anselm held a one-shot advantage at 15-14 and an eight to five edge in shots on goal. Assumption had seven corner kicks to four for the Hawks.
Underhill made six saves in the draw while Abdulky made three saves. The Hawks recorded a 1.36 goals against average which is the lowest the program has seen since the 2010 squad recorded a 1.44 in that category.
