MANCHESTER, N.H. - The women's tennis team headed across the river on Wednesday to face Northeast-10 rival SNHU under the lights, but the Hawks came up short against a tough opponent, and lost by a final margin of 7-0.
In doubles action, the host Penmen took both the #1 and #2 matches to secure the doubles point. However, the Saint Anselm freshman duo of
Elle Doucette (Newburyport, Mass.) and
Abby Svor (Lewiston, Maine) secured victory at #3 doubles, in the most tightly contested match of the night.
Leading 6-5 and up a break, Doucette and Svor had three match points, but the Penmen battled back to tie things up at 6-all, forcing a tiebreaker. After staving off a SNHU match point, the Hawks rallied to victory, earning a 7-6 (6) win.
The home team took the upper hand during the singles portion of play, posting wins in all of the matches by straight-set fashion. Leading the way for Saint Anselm was Doucette, who followed up her doubles triumph with an outstanding performance at #5 singles, in the evening's final match which would end 6-2, 6-4 in favor of SNHU.
Saint Anselm will return to action on Saturday, October 9 at 1pm when the team hosts Saint Michael's at the Derryfield School.
