Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – Taking on the nation's top ranked team, the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell by a 2-0 margin at Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday.
Saint Anselm drops to 4-5 overall on the season and to 2-4 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. The No. 1 team in the country according to the United Soccer Coaches Division II National Poll, Franklin Pierce moves to 10-0 on the season and have won all six of their NE10 fixtures to date.
The Ravens out-shot the Hawks by a convincing 22-0 margin, but Saint Anselm did well to limit the home team to just nine shots on frame in 90 minutes. In fact, the Hawks kept Franklin Pierce off the scoreboard in the first half, limiting the Ravens to just nine shot attempts in the first 45 minutes of play.
Miguel Angel Pastor Gutierrez finally converted for Franklin Pierce with just under three minutes elapsed in the second half, taking a nifty pass from Bernardo Prego near the left post while eluding the Saint Anselm defense.
Later in the game with the Hawks goalkeeper pushed up field on a free kick in the final 30 seconds, Angel Pastor Gutierrez netted his second goal of the contest with six seconds left, kicking the ball from long range into a vacant net.
Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) drew the loss, making seven saves – although the statistics sheet lists the Saint Anselm backstop with two goals allowed, the final tally was put home with Underhill at the Franklin Pierce net-front, looking for the equalizer. Kosta Maniatis was the victorious goalkeeper for Franklin Pierce and was not forced to make a save.
Franklin Pierce had eight of the game's nine corner kicks awarded in their favor. Saint Anselm committed 15 fouls with the Ravens whistled for nine miscues.
Saint Anselm heads to Saint Rose this Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 4 p.m. tilt with the Golden Knights.
