Women's tennis splits Sunday's non-conference matches

SALEM, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team played a pair of non-conference dual matches on Sunday and the Hawks earned a late afternoon 7-2 victory over host Salem State University. The Hawks opened the afternoon with a 5-4 loss in a thrilling contest against Emerson.

Saint Anselm ends the day with a 3-7 overall record. The Hawks return to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Southern New Hampshire.

Saint Anselm grabbed two of three doubles matches versus Emerson to take the early advantage. Freshman Elle Doucette (Newburyport, Mass.) and classmate Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) got on the board with an 8-4 triumph at the No. 3 position, while the tandem of senior Emily Jacy (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) were victorious at No. 2 by a score of 8-7 (6). Jacy and Parzick trailed 7-6, yet fought off a match point for the comeback win.

The Hawks would need to earn just three of six singles matches to secure the overall victory, but were only successful at the No. 4 and No. 5 slots. Parzick found the win column at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-3, 7-5, with teammate Doucette managing a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5.

At No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles, all the matchups went the distance. However, Emerson earned victory on all three courts by way of third-set, 10-point tiebreakers. In the final contest, Casaletto had a chance to seal the match for the Hawks, before losing in a heartbreaker, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 11-9.

Saint Anselm would again take two of three in doubles action against Salem State. Jacy and Parzick posted an 8-0 victory at No. 2, and the No. 3 duo of Abigail Svor and Casaletto earned an 8-2 win.

In singles play, the visiting Hawks were able to post straight-set wins in five of six matches. Abigail Svor was joined by her sister, Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine), in posting 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 6 and No. 3 spots, respectively, and then Parzick's 6-1, 6-0 win secured the overall decision for Saint Anselm.

Doucette also took all twelve of her games at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0) in the next match to finish, with Jacy scoring a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, setting up the day's final match.

In a tightly contested battle, Kapothanasis led 4-3 in the second set at No. 1 singles, before falling by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
