PREVIEW: Men's soccer hosts SNHU in regular season home finale

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team hosts Queen City Cup rival, Southern New Hampshire, in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday at Melucci Field.

The Hawks suffered their worst loss of the season at Adelphi on Saturday, losing by a 5-0 score. With the loss, Saint Anselm is 6-8 with a 3-7 mark in NE10 play. After hosting the Penmen in their final regular season match at Melucci Field, the Hawks travel to Assumption to conclude the regular season.

The Penmen are the sixth-ranked team in the East region, according to the United Soccer Coaches. Southern New Hampshire extended their current unbeaten streak to six games with a 4-1 win over New Haven. They improved to 8-4-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in league play. The Penmen head to Southern Connecticut State before wrapping-up the regular season by hosting Stonehill.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Since the 1-0 overtime victory which got the team back to 0.500 on the season, the Hawks have fallen to Le Moyne and Adelphi, dropping them to 6-8. The Hawks opened the season with a 4-1 record but fell in their next five to push the record to 4-6. The squad recorded a pair of wins before more recently falling in each of the last two matches.
  • Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) has accumulated 59 saves which ranks second in the NE10. Underhill has played every minute of all 14 matches for the Hawks and now has a 1.28 goals against average and a 0.766 save percentage after making five saves in the loss to Adelphi.
  • Senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) is the team leader in goals (five), assists (five), and points (15). Elliot's five assists is tied for sixth in the NE10. Junior Josue Assantha (Democratic Republic of the Congo) is second in all categories with four goals, two assists, and 10 points.
  • Six other Hawks student-athletes have recorded a goal with five of them finding the back of the net for the first time in their collegiate careers. In the assist category, four other student-athletes have a helper, bringing the team to a total of 11 for the season.
  • At the time of writing, Saint Anselm sits in ninth in the conference standings which is one spot out of the conference playoffs. The Hawks currently have a 0.300-win percentage and could get that as high as 0.416.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • After opening the season 3-4, the Penmen are unbeaten in six consecutive matches with wins over Bentley, American International, Le Moyne, Saint Michael's, and New Haven. The only tie in the stretch is against Saint Rose. During the streak, the Penmen have outscored opponents, 15-4.
  • Alexander Reiter leads the team in scoring with six goals and in points with 13. Michael Goncalves and Nadjiib Chibout are tied for second with four goals each. As a team, the Penmen have found the back of the net 28 times.
  • Nicolas Gonzalez and Jaime Selva are tied for the team-lead with five assists each. They join Elliot in a tie for sixth in the conference in assists. Kwesi Allen has recorded four assists on the season.
  • Jackson Rivers and Santiago Rojas have split time in net for the Penmen as Rivers has drawn eight starts to five for Rojas. Rivers has a 0.86 goals against average and a 0.833-percentage while Rojas sits at 0.96 and 0.706, respectively.
  • Southern New Hampshire is currently fourth in the NE10 with a 0.722-win percentage. They have outscored opponents in conference play by a 21-9 margin.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • This will be the 47th meeting all-time between the Hawks and Penmen. Southern New Hampshire leads the all-time series, 33-7-6.
  • The Penmen are unbeaten in the last 10 meetings with the Hawks including the last meeting on Oct. 29, 2019, resulting in a 4-1 win for the Penmen.
  • The last Hawks win came on Nov. 1, 2009 which was a 1-0 victory in the NE10 playoffs.
