Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer defeated by Assumption, 1-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – In a battle of regionally-ranked programs, the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match to Assumption on Saturday, 1-0.

The Hawks fall to 5-2-1 overall with a 3-2-1 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Greyhounds push their unbeaten streak to six games, improving to 4-1-3 on the season and to 2-0-3 in league matches.

Saint Anselm's unbeaten streak of five games is snapped and one of the longest shutout streaks in program history came to a close at 448:37 minutes. Assumption was able to avenge a 2-1 loss to Saint Anselm earlier in the season that came in double overtime – Saturday's result came in a conference game.

"I thought the team started quickly and controlled the game throughout, but our inability to finish in moments we created breathed life into our opponent. Credit to Assumption for their performance; they made the most of their opportunities," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "This team is learning what it takes to win in the NE10 and that process is never a straight shot to the moon. Our path will be crooked and today showed us that we are on the right path, but there is more work to be done. "

The Hawks opened the match on the offensive as freshman Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) and senior Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.) both registered shots on Greyhounds goalkeeper Julia Walsh.

Saint Anselm drew a foul about 25 yards out in the 28th minute, opening up a chance for junior Kathryn White (Georgetown, Mass.). Taking full advantage of her field position, White was able to place a shot toward the net, but she missed just high and the ball bounced off the crossbar.

With the Hawks crashing to the net, the ball was cleared out to Assumption's Haleigh Ward in the middle of the field. Ward sent a pass forward to midfield for Diana Bruggeman, who quickly surveyed and found Kate Carlson who was in a one-on-one with a Hawks defender. Carlson stopped just inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot over junior goalkeeper Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) and into the back of the net to give Assumption a 1-0 lead, ending the Hawks shutout streak.

Freshman Alison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.), sophomore Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.), and freshman Anna Rigby (Marblehead, Mass.) recorded shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of the opening half but Walsh made the stops necessary to preserve the Greyhounds 1-0 lead.

White took another free kick in the 51st minute, this one from the right side of the box. However, Walsh came off her line to catch the ball in mid-air as three Hawks closed in looking for a deflection to nab the equalizer, marking the best scoring chance for Saint Anselm in the second half.

Saint Anselm only managed four shots in the second half after posting 12 in the opening 45. The Hawks finished the game with a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.

Macaluso falls to 5-2-1 on the season after making two saves on three shots on goal. Walsh improves to 4-1-3 after posting a seven-save shutout.
