PREVIEW: Men's soccer concludes non-league schedule at St. Thomas Aquinas

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team concludes its non-conference schedule on Tuesday at Saint Thomas Aquinas.

The Hawks fell to Saint Rose on Saturday, 2-0. Saint Anselm held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal but could not convert on the scoring chances. The Hawks have dropped their last five decisions and are 4-6 on the season with a 2-5 record in league matches. After the Saint Thomas Aquinas contest, the Hawks return home to host Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Oct. 16 with the opening kick slated for 3 p.m.

The Spartans registered a 4-0 victory at Daemen on Saturday. Jorge Umana had five points on two goals and an assist in the win. STAC improved to 7-2-1 on the season with a 4-1 record in East Coast Conference play. After hosting the Hawks, the Spartans return to league play by hosting Staten Island on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Fans attending the match at Spartan Field are expected to familiarize themselves with the Saint Thomas Aquinas spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks opened the season with a 4-1 record have dropped their last five matches to fall to 4-6 and 2-5 in the NE10. In the stretch, Saint Anselm has not allowed more than two goals in a match but have only scored once in 450 minutes of game time.
  • Saint Anselm is led by senior Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) who has five goals and three assists for 13 points. Following closely is junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo) who has four goals and two assists for 10 points. They combine for nine of the 12 Hawks' goals this season.
  • Senior Patrick Sorenson (Sturbridge, Mass.) and juniors Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) and Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.) have all found the back of the net once this season. Silverstein, sophomore Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.), and sophomore Thomas Prentice (Merrimack, N.H.) all have one assist this season.
  • Junior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) has appeared in every minute of the Hawks' 10 games this season. He is 4-6 with a .771 save percentage and a 1.10 goals against. Underhill has made 37 saves this season which is fifth-highest in the conference.
  • In the NE10 standings, Saint Anselm is tied-for 10th with a .286-win percentage. On the season, the Hawks have a plus-one goal differential but in conference play, they hold a minus-2 differential.
SCOUTING SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
  • The Spartans are winners in their last four matches, outscoring opponents by a 15-3 margin. Their last loss came on Sept. 18 in the ECC season opener at Dist. Columbia.
  • Anthony Sanchez is the team-leader with eight goals. He ranks second on the team in goals and has a team-high 19 points. Umana leads the team with six assists and has four goals for 14 points. Four other Spartans had recorded double digit goals and eight outside of Sanchez and Umana have found the net.
  • Dan Dougill and Joel Hofstetter have two assists each while three others have one helper this season.
  • Asier Vegas is 6-1 in seven games played with a 1.03 goals against average and a .800 save percentage. Felix Davies has played in three games and is 1-1-1. He has a .700 save percentage and a 1.86 goals against.
  • The Spartans are in second in the ECC standings with 12 points. They have a .800-win percentage in conference games this season.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
  • The Spartans are 5-1-1 against the Hawks all-time with the Hawks earning their first win in the all-time series in the team's last meeting. Saint Anselm posted a 3-2 victory on Sept. 7, 2019.
  • The longest win streak was three-matches starting on Sept. 1, 2012 and ending in the 2019 meeting.
  • Saint Thomas Aquinas posted a 3-0 win in 2012, which marks the largest margin of victory in the all-time series.
