Women's tennis gets by American Int'l, 4-3

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team played host to American International College on Friday afternoon and the Hawks secured their first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season, 4-3, in a tightly contested match.

Saint Anselm won the doubles point, when the No. 2 tandem of senior Emily Jacy (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.), paired together for the first time this season, posted a 6-4 triumph over the Yellow Jackets' duo. The No. 1 doubles duo of junior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) and freshman Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) led 6-5 and were serving, but that match went unfinished as the home side had already earned the No. 3 doubles win by default.

Kapothanasis led the way for Saint Anselm at the top of the singles lineup and battled against a tough opponent, coming up short by a final margin of 6-4, 6-3. Jacy lost by the same score at the No. 2 singles position in a close match that included several long rallies.

With the Yellow Jackets defaulting at No. 6 singles, the Hawks would need to win just two of the three remaining fixtures to earn the overall victory. Julia Svor put the Hawks up by a 3-2 score, producing a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win at No. 3 singles.

At No. 4 singles, Parzick held off a second-set fight from AIC's Brianna Shvetsov, and the first-year's 6-4, 6-4 win would close out the Yellow Jackets to clinch the match.

With the overall outcome determined, freshman Elle Doucette (Newburyport, Mass.) fell just short in a third set tiebreaker after coming from behind to win the second set at No. 5 singles. Doucette's 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 loss was the only three-set match played on Friday.

The team returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when it travels to Salem State for a pair of two non-conference tilts.
