BABSON PARK, Mass. – Mike Ferraro scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 remaining and Shane Joyce made 35 saves to lead the Saint Anselm College men's hockey team to a 2-1 road victory over Babson College on Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at the Babson Skating Center.
Box Score
Ferraro broke a 1-1 deadlock by putting in a rebound off his own shot for the unassisted game-winner with 2:02 to play for Saint Anselm (7-6-1, 4-5-0 NEHC). Joyce posted his second-highest save total of the season for the Hawks in the win over Babson (8-6-1, 5-3-0 NEHC), which saw its 16-game home unbeaten streak come to an end with its first home loss in nearly a calendar year.
Saint Anselm led 1-0 after the first period thanks to 18 saves from Shane Joyce and CJ Blaszka's second goal in as many days. Blaszka tipped in a Peter Sikalis shot from the point at 13:38 of the opener and Joyce made four sprawling saves in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Beavers at bay. The assist for Sikalis was the senior defenseman's 10th point (4-6-10) in the last 10 games.
Early in the second, Jon Pallotta fired one off the post and Brendon Kerrigan saw a tipped effort in front saved by Bryan Botcher as the Hawks looked to add a second. Joyce produced a double save on Bill Seligman and Jake Donahue near the midpoint of the period and made a pair of saves on a Babson 4-on-3 power play to keep Saint Anselm ahead.
However, the Beavers' pressure paid off as Joe DePietto rifled one in off the underside of the bar with 1:00 remaining in the second period to send the teams to the third tied at 1-1. In the first four minutes of the third period, the Hawks killed off a Babson power play and Ferraro hit the post with a shot headed towards the top-left corner.
Each team had a power-play opportunity prior to Ferraro's second game-winner in the last week but could not convert, with Joyce producing three saves on the penalty kill with less than five minutes to go. Following Ferraro's winner, the Beavers pulled Botcher for the final 1:35 but two more Joyce saves helped the Hawks hang on to the lead and snap Babson's home winning streak.
The Beavers outshot the Hawks 18-14 in the first period and shots were even over the final two periods, leaving the hosts with a 36-32 advantage for the game. Joyce moved to 6-4-1 on the season by saving 35-of-36 shots faced, while Botcher suffered the loss despite 30 saves.
Saint Anselm is home for two games next weekend, beginning with an NEHC matchup against Skidmore on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.
