Box Score
Owen Campbell's second-period goal gave Skidmore (7-7-2, 6-2-1 NEHC) a 1-0 lead after two periods but Cameron's second-career goal canceled it out for Saint Anselm (7-6-2, 4-5-1 NEHC). The Hawks pushed for a late winner, outshooting the Thoroughbreds 17-9 over the final 25 minutes but the teams eventually settled for a tie.
After a scoreless first period in which Skidmore held a 9-6 advantage in shots, the visitors went ahead at 4:06 of the second when Campbell fired a shot from the middle of the left circle over the glove of Shane Joyce off assists from Marc Cibelli and Matt Wolf. Nick Leonard hit the near post from the left side just a couple minutes later and CJ Blaszka and Vin D'Amato had chances in quick succession on the power play later in the period but were denied by Jack McDonald.
Seven minutes into the third, the Hawks caught the Thoroughbreds on a change and Jeremy Carignan found Trey Aiello in front but his shot was right at McDonald. Saint Anselm found a tying goal at 7:13 of the final period as Mike Ferraro found Cameron in front for the tying goal. Jon Pallotta also picked up a helper on Cameron's tally.
A little over a minute later, Saint Anselm nearly went ahead after Cameron nearly found Bryan Green in front of the net for a re-direction. Joyce kept the game tied with about five minutes left when he denied Anthony Bird following a turnover in the Hawks' defensive zone.
Saint Anselm took five of the six shots in overtime but McDonald turned aside a Blaszka shot from the slot a minute in and a Nick Leonard shot from in close with 45 seconds to go. Joyce stopped a Campbell effort with 22.3 seconds to go, before the Hawks had three shots in the closing seconds, including a Brendon Kerrigan shot at the final horn that was saved by McDonald.
Saint Anselm outshot Skidmore 35-26 in the game. Joyce made 25 saves to move to 6-4-2 on the season, while McDonald stopped 34 shots and is now 3-5-2.
The Hawks are back at it on Saturday, Jan. 14 when Castleton University comes to Sullivan Arena to cap a hockey doubleheader in a 4 p.m. start.
