ALBANY, N.Y. – JD Hayward scored his first-career goal in the 88th minute to give the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team its first Northeast-10 Conference win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the College of Saint Rose on Saturday night at Sullivan Field.

With time winding down and overtime looming, Hayward picked a good time for his first collegiate goal for Saint Anselm (2-4, 1-3 NE-10), driving home a loose ball from 12 yards out. Stephen McLeod and the Hawks' defense held Saint Rose (2-5, 0-4 NE-10) scoreless for McLeod's fifth-career shutout.
The Golden Knights outshot the Hawks 12-4 in the game but McLeod made four saves to pick up his second win of the season. The win was also head coach Bruno Victal's first NE-10 victory.
Saint Rose took eight of its 12 shots in the opening half, including two shots on goal in the opening 12 minutes, but could not find a way past McLeod. In the second half, McLeod made a diving stop to his right to deny Carlos Menjivar in the 58th minute and added another stop on Ryan Rooney's header in the 71st minute.
Suleiman Haruna-Iya had a game-high four shots for the Golden Knights, while Menjivar had three. Christian Esposito stopped one shot to fall to 2-5 on the season for Saint Rose.
Saint Anselm hosts Le Moyne on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at Melucci Field.
