Lynch grabs a goal, Purple Knights down men's soccer 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jack Lynch's first goal of the season was not enough for the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon at Melucci Field.

Box Score

Saint Michael's (3-3-0, 1-2-0 NE-10) scored early in both halves to take a 2-0 lead on Saint Anselm (1-4-0, 0-3-0 NE-10). The Hawks hit back on Lynch's goal to cut the deficit in half with half an hour to play but could not come up with a tying goal.

With Saint Anselm down two goals, Lynch scored off a well-worked short free kick routine in the 59th minute for the 10th goal of his career. Jack Heintzelman rolled the free kick into the path of Eddie Conroy, who served up a cross to Lynch's head at the back post to make it a 2-1 game.

Saint Michael's opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game as Cole McIntire pounced on a long ball over the top from Aaron DaCosta and headed the ball over a rushing Stephen McLeod. Heintzelman had a chance to tie the game late in the first half but Gabriel Pineda made a leaping save after Heintzelman cut in from the left side and curled a shot on goal.

McIntire and DaCosta again connected in the 52nd minute to double the Saint Michael's lead. This time, McIntire played a long ball that sent DaCosta through on goal and he finished into the lower-right corner in a 1-on-1 with McLeod.

Gabriel Pineda picked up the win for Saint Michael's by making two saves, while McLeod made one save in the loss. Both teams had eight shots, three on goal, on the afternoon.

Saint Anselm heads to Saint Rose for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 24.
