MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team used set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20 to sweep Assumption College in a non-conference matchup on Friday night at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Box Score
Junior Katy Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led the Hawks with 12 kills and a pair of blocks, while Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) joined her in double-figures in kills with 10 and four blocks of her own. Freshman Madison Sollows (West Barnstable, Mass.) registered eight kills and five digs in her first collegiate match.
Defensively, CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.) posted a game-high 18 digs on the night. Riley Grussing (Willmar, Minn.) handed out a game-high 43 assists to go with eight digs and one block.
Assumption was led by nine kills from Kellie Smith, while Kiki Romanik had an all-around game with four kills, 18 assists and six digs. Maria Chrisom led the Greyhounds with 16 digs, and Olivia Burke registered a game-high five blocks on the night.
A Katy Teets kill followed by an Assumption error helped give the Hawks a 13-7 lead midway through the first set and forced a Greyhound timeout. After a point by the visitors, the Hawks scored three-straight to take a 17-8 lead after an Amanda Bickford (Salem, N.H.) kill and two more Assumption errors.
The Greyhounds answered with a 7-2 run capped off by a Kellie Smith kill to make it a 20-15 game. Teets ended the run with a kill to make it 21-15, but Assumption would not go away as they pulled to within three points at 21-18 after a Romanik service ace. Teets nailed another kill, and the Hawks scored three of the final five points of the set to take game one, 25-20.
Set two started out much the same as a Sollows kill put the Hawks on top 14-7, leading to an Assumption timeout. Saint Anselm kept it a 17-10 game after a Cahterine McCarthy (Broad Run, Va.) kill, but the Greyhounds used a 6-0 run to get within one point at 17-16.
This time the Hawks had the answer as they responded with an 8-2 run to end the game – including three kills from Sarah Lowery (Chicago, Ill.) – to pull ahead 2-0 in the match with the 25-18 win.
Saint Anselm dominated the opening points of the third game as back-to-back kills from Teets put the Hawks on top 7-1. The two teams traded points until a McCarthy service ace put the Hawks on top 13-7, but the Greyhounds used a 5-1 spurt to force a Saint Anselm timeout with the score 14-12.
Assumption pulled to within one at 16-15 on a block by Olivia Burke and Zara Valez, but that would be as close as they would get as the Hawks scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 23-18 lead and force another Assumption timeout. After two points by Assumption made it 23-20, Sollows knocked down another kill and Assumption made one final error on the night to give the Hawks a 25-20 win and the 3-0 sweep.
Saint Anselm (1-0) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Felician University at 2 p.m. on the campus of Assumption College (0-1).
