Volleyball nabs second-straight win to start season

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team picked up their second-straight sweep to start the season with a 3-0 victory over Felician University on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

Box Score

The Hawks hit .349 as a team in the match and were led by nine kills from Sarah Lowery (Chicago, Ill.). Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) added eight kills and a block, while Amanda Bickford (Salem, N.H.) registered seven kills. CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.) led the defense with 12 digs, and Riley Grussing (Willmar, Minn.) handed out 25 assists to go with six digs.

Felician was led by a match-high 14 kills from Carmen Shaw, while Paulina Calero had seven kills, eight digs and a block. Lauren Mack registered a team-high 10 digs, while Charlotte Greek handed out 21 assists.

Saint Anselm picked up where they left off last night, racing out to an early 9-1 lead following a Felician error. Unfortunately for the Hawks, things were much the same for their opponents as the Golden Falcons answered with a 9-1 run of their own to make it an 11-10 game.

The Hawks had a response, scoring seven of the next nine points to take an 18-11 lead. Felician would get as close as 23-20, using a big 8-2 run to get within striking distance, but back-to-back kills from Amanda Williams sealed the opening set for the Hawks.

Felician controlled play early in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead, but the Hawks answered in a big way, rattling off a 14-3 run to grab an 18-11 advantage. After a point by the Golden Falcons made it an 18-12 game, the Hawks closed out the game by scoring five of the final six points for the 25-13 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Saint Anselm had to rally from an early 6-2 hole in the third game to take a 9-7 lead following a Sarah Lowery kill. Felician tied the match at 10-all, but four-straight points from the Hawks – including two more Lowery kills – pushed their lead to 14-10.

The Hawks kept up the pressure and eventually built a 19-12 lead after another Felician error. With their backs against the wall, the Golden Falcons scored five-straight points to pull within two at 19-17, but Saint Anselm answered right back with five-straight of their own to take a commanding 24-17 lead. The Hawks would eventually close out the game on a Felician error to earn the 3-0 sweep.

Saint Anselm returns to action next weekend when the Hawks travel to East Stroudsburg University for a two-day tournament beginning with a 2 p.m. meeting against Molloy on Friday, Sept. 9.
