NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite outshooting Southern Connecticut State University 10-7 in the game, the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by the Owls in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Southern Connecticut State (1-3-1, 1-1 NE-10) scored twice in the opening half hour and added a third in the first 10 minutes of the second half to blank Saint Anselm (2-3-0, 0-2-0 NE-10). The Owls scored on three of their five shots on target in the game, while Gabrielle Arruda stopped all six shots she faced in the shutout.
The hosts started the scoring in the seventh minute when Victoria Buonanni found the bottom-left corner with a left-footed shot from 12 yards out for her second goal of the season. In the next five minutes, Saint Anselm earned six corner kicks and had a pair of shots but could not capitalize.
The Owls doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Marisa Grisell squared the ball to Victoria Conde inside the six-yard box for Grisell's first goal of the year. Each team had four shots in the opening half.
In the second half, Saint Anselm outshot Southern Connecticut State by a 6-3 margin but it the Owls added a third goal in the 55th minute. Kieran DeBiase picked out Brianna Casey, who found the bottom-left corner to close out the scoring.
Five minutes earlier, the Hawks had three chances in quick succession to get within a goal. Arruda made point-blank saves to deny Kendra Bonczar and Kiley Larocque and Larocque's second was high. The teams endured a 30-minute lightning delay midway through the second half but there was no scoring after the delay.
Elise Bouchard made a pair of saves after the break for the Hawks after Cassie Quattropani played the opening half.
Saint Anselm hosts Assumption on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. in the team's long-awaited home opener after five-straight games away from home to start the season.
