Assumption scores late to pull away for win over baseball

MANCHESTER, N.H. – On a rain soaked Sunday afternoon, the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 12-3 decision to Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Sullivan Park in Manchester, N.H.

Box Score

Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Hawks (8-34, 3-22 NE-10, 3-17 NE-10 NE). Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) went 2-for-4, while Aaron Crandall (Billerica, Mass.) drove in three more runs while going 1-for-5 at the plate. Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.), Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.), Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) and Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.) also added hits.

Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) pitched 6.2 innings and gave up five runs on 11 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in the setback.

Assumption's Hunter Tralli went 5-for-6 with four RBI's and three runs scored to lead the Greyhounds. Mike Coggeshall and Tom Paine combined to go 4-for-8 with five runs batted in and four runs scored. Tom Horstkotte scattered eight hits over 7.1 innings and allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the season.

The Greyhounds jumped on top in the top of the first inning as Tralli reached on a one out single and stole second followed by Mike Coggeshall working a walk. Tyler Buck was able to get the second out of the inning on a fly-out, but Tom Paine roped a two-run double down the line in left to give Assumption the 2-0 lead. Colin Clancey followed with an RBI single through the left side that made it a 3-0 game in favor of the visitors.

Paul Trabucco got the first hit of the day for Saint Anselm in the bottom of the first, and Allan McQuarrie added a hit in the bottom of the second, but the Hawks could not get them home.

Saint Anselm threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Matthew Flynn led off the inning with a single to right-center, and Nick Bragole reached on an error to put two runners on with two outs. Flynn and Bragole advanced into scoring position when Tom Horstkotte was called for a balk, but Horstkotte responded by striking out the final batter of the inning to end the threat.

Assumption tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh as Coggeshall homered over the fence in centerfield to put the Greyhounds in front 5-0.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks loaded the bases as Max Wadington flared a single into left center and Tyler McKeon (Rutland, Mass.) worked a walk. After another out, Matthew Flynn dropped a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line for a hit to load the bases. Aaron Crandall cleared the bases with one swing of the bat, driving in three runs to make it a 5-3 game, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.

The Greyhounds took the momentum back in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs on RBI singles from Hunter Tralli and Andrew Jaehnig, while Tom Paine picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly and another run scored on a passed ball to give Assumption a 9-3 lead.

Nick Bragole led off the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle to chase Horstkotte from the game, and Jon McQuarrie greeted the new pitcher Anthony Perry with a single through the left side to put two runners on. Perry struck out the next batter he faced, but Max Wadington drew a walk to load the bases. Perry worked out of the jam by forcing a pop-out in the infield to end the inning.

Tralli struck again for the Greyhounds in the top of the ninth as he hit a bases-clearing three-run double to the gap in right center to round out the scoring and give Assumption the 12-3 win.

The Hawks wrap up the 2016 season on Tuesday afternoon when they host #2 Franklin Pierce University in a 3:30 p.m. matchup with the Ravens.
