Box Score Game One / Box Score Game Two
WINTER PARK, Fla. – On the final day of their spring break trip, the Saint Anselm College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Concordia College on Saturday afternoon in Winter Park, Fla. The Clippers (3-3) took the opening game 5-1, while the Hawks (2-10) grabbed a 6-2 win in seven innings in the nightcap.
In game one, Concordia scored twice in the opening inning as German Dilone drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single to right to put the Clippers on top 2-0. The Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the second as Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.), Jason Turner (Milton, Mass.), and Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) led off the inning with three-straight singles. Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) grounded into a double play that plated Bragole to make it 2-1, but Saint Anselm could not push home Turner from third.
Concordia went back on top by two at 3-1 as Brian Bilello scored on a wild pitch after tripling in the top of the third. The Hawks had runners on second and third in their half of the inning and only one out, but the Clippers worked out of trouble to keep Saint Anselm off the scoreboard.
The Hawks threatened again in the fourth after Jason Turner opened the inning with a double down the right field line, and had runners on the corners after Jon McQuarrie worked a walk. Saint Anselm came away empty-handed again, however, as Dylan Lawrence got the last two outs of the fourth. Saint Anselm would only get a runner to second base two more times in the game, while the Clippers added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth to give Concordia the 5-1 win over Saint Anselm.
Bragole and Turner combined to go 4-for-7 on the day with a run scored, while Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Sean Doherty (Haverhill, Mass.), Allan McQuarrie, and Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, Fla.) each went 1-for-4. Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) suffered the setback while tossing eight innings and scattering 10 hits and giving up five runs (three earned) while striking out seven.
In the second game of the day, the Hawks offense erupted for four runs in the top of the second as John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove in Dan Bodi (Westford, Mass.) with an RBI double to right and Sean Doherty followed with an RBI single to right field to make it a 2-0 game. Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.) cleared the bases with a two-run double to right center to put the Hawks on top 4-0.
Carpenter drove in another run in the top of the fourth with a run-scoring single, and Nick Bragole homered in the top of the seventh to put the Hawks on top 6-0.
That would be all the offense Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) would need as he kept Concordia off the scoreboard through six-plus innings of work, scattering eight hits and allowing only two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) struck out a pair in the bottom of the seventh to close the door and earn his first save of the year.
Saint Anselm travels to Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, March 19, for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
