MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to rival and #14-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Sullivan Park in Manchester, N.H. The Hawks fall to 3-13 and 0-1 in the NE-10 with the setback, while SNHU improves to 15-2 and 1-0 in league games.
Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) pitched well for Saint Anselm, tossing seven innings and scattering seven hits while giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out three. Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) pitched a perfect eighth inning, while Jonathan Dunn (Nashua, N.H.) allowed only one hit in the ninth to close out the game.
Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, with Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also registering a pair of hits on the day. Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) and Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, Fla.) each went 1-for-3, while Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) was 1-for-4 at the dish with an RBI.
SNHU's Justin Valdespina picked up the win while throwing six innings and giving up three hits and one unearned run. Jake Walkinshaw tossed the final 2.1 innings, surrendering a pair of hits in picking up his fifth save of the season. Carson Helms went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to power the Penmen offense.
The Hawks struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Carpenter led off the inning with a laser up the middle that was stopped with a diving play by the Penmen's Mike Mastroberti, but his throw to first went wide, allowing Carpenter to take second base. Carpenter advanced to third on a groundout by Allan McQuarrie, and Jon McQuarrie drove the sophomore in with a groundout to short that gave the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.
SNHU capitalized on a Hawk misstep in the top of the fourth with Carson Helms on second base following a single and a stolen base. Derek Bauer hit a groundball to first, but the throw to Gates covering was off-line, allowing Helms to scoot home from third and knot the game at 1-1.
The Penmen pulled ahead for good off the bat of Helms as he opened the sixth inning with a homerun to left center that gave SNHU the 2-1 lead. Ryan Gendron followed with a double to left, and Bauer drove him in with a single to right to put SNHU in front, 3-1.
Saint Anselm threatened in the both the seventh and eighth inning as Jon McQuarrie flared a single to right field and John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) worked a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, Flynn flied out to centerfield to end the inning and end the threat. With two outs in the eighth, Morrisino singled to right, stole second, and eventually reached third on a wild pitch, but the Hawks came away empty handed.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon in a 4:00 p.m. game against Merrimack College at Trinity Stadium in Haverhill, Mass.
