HAVERHILL, Mass. – Senior Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) pitched eight innings, scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run with four strikeouts to help lead the Saint Anselm College baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Haverhill, Mass.
The Hawks improve to 4-13 and 1-1 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Warriors fall to 11-8 and 1-1 in league games. The two teams will wrap up the series in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon starting at 12:00 p.m. on the campus of Merrimack.
After Merrimack tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, Saint Anselm's Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to put the Hawks on top 2-1 headed into the final half inning. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors put runners on first second after a single from Chris Cimmino.
Matthew Ronai stepped to the plate and hit a line drive to center field that looked destined for a hit, but Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made a diving stop and came up firing, doubling-off the runner on second base and ending the game. Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) picked up his first save of the season in relief of Hudon.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the second as Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) drove in Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.) with an RBI single to put Saint Anselm on top 1-0. Merrimack threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but Hudon ended the inning with a double-play ball to keep the Warriors off the board.
Hudon scattered four hits through the first seven innings of the game, only allowing a runner to reach third one time. Merrimack finally broke through in the eighth inning as the Warriors put runners on the corners with only one out. The home team used a squeeze play to score Ronai from third to tie the game at 1-1, and after an intentional walk, Hudon wrapped up his day by forcing Sean O'Neill to ground out to first to end the inning and his day.
Sean Doherty (Haverhill, Mass.), Bragole, and Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) each went 1-for-4 on the day, while Jon McQuarrie was 1-for-3 and Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 at the dish.
Merrimack's PJ Browne suffered the setback while pitching 8.1 innings and giving up six hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out eight. Matthew Ronai led the Warriors offense, going 2-for-4.
