McKeon's ninth-inning single gives baseball 2-1 win over Spartans

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Freshman Tyler McKeon delivered a two-out, game-winning RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Saint Anselm College baseball team a 2-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday afternoon at St. Joseph's Complex.

Box Score

With two outs and runners on first and third, McKeon knocked the game-winning hit for his first collegiate RBI, scoring Jon McQuarrie for Saint Anselm. The inning started with a walk to Allan McQuarrie, who stole second before being picked off. Younger brother Jon followed with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a pitching change and a walk to Connor Parent, Matthew Flynn reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to set the stage for McKeon.

With the win, Saint Anselm improves to 3-12 on the season, while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 12-5 with the loss. The Spartans had swept the Hawks on Saturday afternoon by scores of 9-1 and 1-0.

Seve Llanio earned his first-career win by allowing two hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Llanio retired the first two batters before the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs. The senior escaped the jam by inducing a ground ball fielder's choice and went on to retire STAC in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Buck worked the first seven innings and held the Spartans to one run on five hits. Buck walked three and struck out one. The lone run STAC scored was Richard Cesca's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Later in the inning, the Spartans had runners on first and second with two outs but Buck wriggled out of trouble.

St. Thomas Aquinas starter John Bednarek limited the Hawks to four hits and one run in seven innings and struck out six without walking a batter. Saint Anselm got its lone run off Bednarek in the top of the fifth. Parent led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. With two outs, Paul Trabucco singled to left to score Parent but was thrown out at second on the play.

The Spartans left 10 runners on base over the course of the game, including seven in scoring position, while the Hawks stranded nine on the bases. Saint Anselm turned three double plays in the game and stole a season-high five bases.

Saint Anselm hosts crosstown-rival Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, March 23 at 3 p.m. at Sullivan Park in the home opener for the Hawks. The teams will play a single game.
