Box Score

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team posted their first win of 2016 with a 4-3 victory at Limestone College on Sunday afternoon in Gaffney, S.C. The Hawks improve to 1-2 overall, while the Saints fall to 3-3.

Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) tossed seven innings, scattering four hits and giving up only two earned runs while striking out five for his first win of the season. Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) picked up his first save of the year, throwing the last two innings and giving up one run on five hits.

Offensively, Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) and Connor Parent (Katy, Texas) each went 2-for-4, with Parent driving in a pair of runs. Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.) and John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each scored a run.

The Hawks did all their damage in the first inning as they loaded the bases on walks by Wadington and Marculitis, while Bragole was hit by a pitch. Allan McQuarrie stepped to the plate and drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single up the middle. After McQuarrie stole second, Connor Parent stroked a single to left center to drive in McQuarrie and Marculitis and put Saint Anselm on top 4-0.

Levasseur kept the Saints hitless through the first two innings, but the Saints got one back in the bottom of the third. Chris Ford scored from second on an RBI single from Dillion Palencia to make it a 4-1 game. The Saints cut the deficit in half in the next inning after Brandon Hood doubled to center field and came around to score on an RBI single from Garrett Lowery.

The junior Levasseur settled down from the fifth to the seventh inning, allowing only one baserunner on a walk before giving way to Autrey Gates. Gates got the first two outs of the eighth inning, but Limestone put runners on first and second with back-to-back singles. Gates forced a groundball to the left side that Bragole scooped up and touched third to escape the danger.

In the bottom of the ninth, Gates got the first two outs of the inning, but the Saints' Ian Hinson hit a pinch-hit double to give Limestone some life. Austin Marcellus followed with an RBI single to right field that made it a 4-3 game. Chris Stewart reached with a single to left and Limestone had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Gates forced Chris Ford to foul out left field to seal the Hawks first win of the year.

Saint Anselm takes three weeks off before traveling to Florida and taking on Bentley University at Lake Brantley High School in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27.
