ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a non-league doubleheader to Bentley University on Saturday afternoon at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Hawks (1-4) fell in game one, 3-1, before dropping the nightcap 5-1 to the Falcons (3-5).
The two teams will wrap up a three game set tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at the same park.
In game one, Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) pitched very well for the Hawks as he tossed 7.2 innings while giving up three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) and Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Connor Parent (Katy, Texas), and John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each going 1-for-4. Morrisino scored the lone run of the game for the Hawks.
Both offenses were held off the board through the first seven innings as Hudon and Bentley's Bill Sullivan were locked in a pitcher's duel. Saint Anselm pushed the game's first run across in the top of the eighth as Morrisino came in the back door on a double-play ball to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.
Bentley answered right back in their half of the eighth as Justin Ashworth hit an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1, and Brandon Grover put the Falcons ahead for good with a two-run single that plated Ashworth and Ryan O'Connor to make it a 3-1 game.
Marculitis reached base with a single in the top of the ninth, but Jack Burke retired the last two batters he faced to give Bentley the 3-1 win.
The Falcons struck first in game two as Ashworth laced an RBI double to left field to give Bentley a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Morrisino tied the game at 1-1 as he scored from third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Bentley jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Mike Muir drove in a run with an RBI groundout.
Bentley would add a run in each of the final three innings to take the 5-1 decision.
Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) suffered the setback for the Hawks lasting five innings while giving up two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) pitched two innings and struck out a pair and gave up a run, while Clayton Welch (Manchester, N.H.) and Andy Williams (Merrimack, N.H.) each gave up a run in an inning of work.
Ken Morrisino and Allan McQuarrie each went 1-for-2 with Morrisino scoring a run. Trabucco, Marculitis, and Aaron Crandall (Billerica, Mass.) also added hits.
