GORHAM, Maine – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at the University of Southern Maine on Friday night in New England Hockey Conference action in Gorham, Maine. The Hawks drop to 10-8-3 overall and 6-6-3 in the NEHC, while the Huskies improve to 6-15-1 and 3-12-0 in conference games.
Southern Maine struck first 13:09 into the first period as Tyler Mathieu took a long pass from Parker Sanderson and skated in on Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.). Mathieu snuck a wrist shot past the glove of Soucy to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.
The Hawks answered back 13: 12 in to the second period when Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) netted his fifth goal of season to pull the Hawks even at 1-1. Mark Meads (Middleton, Mass.) fired a shot on net that was stopped by the Southern Maine goalie, and Sullivan corralled the rebound, firing a shot into the open side from 20 feet out.
With just over 11 minutes remaining in the third period, the Huskies took advantage of a power play chance and scored the eventual game-winner. Zach Dymock took a pass from PM Lapointe and potted a wrist shot from the blue line that proved to be the difference in the game.
With less than two minutes to play, the Hawks emptied their net to try and find the equalizer. Southern Maine helped the cause with a roughing penalty in the closing minutes leading to a 6-on-4 power play chance for the Hawks. Saint Anselm fired away, but came up empty as the Huskies cleared the puck from the zone in the closing seconds, helping time run out on the game.
Saint Anselm held a 25-20 advantage in shots on goal, but went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Huskies went 1-for-2 with the extra man. Colin Soucy stopped 18-of-20 shots he faced in the setback, while Kyle Shapiro made 24 saves in his sixth win of the year.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to the University of New England for a 4:00 p.m. meeting with the Nor'Easters.
