BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team nearly overcame a three goal deficit but eventually fell to the University of New England, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in a New England Hockey Conference matchup in Biddeford, Maine.
The Hawks fall to 10-9-3 overall and 6-7-3 in the NEHC, while UNE improves to 12-9-2 and 8-7-1 in conference matchup.
The Nor'Easters scored both goals in the opening period as Ryan Quinn tallied the first score of the day 4:14 into the first period on a pass from Armand Uomoleale. Uomoleale extended the UNE lead to 2-0 just under two minutes later as he converted on the power play, tipping in a shot from Trevor Fleurent.
Blaise Healey gave the Nor'Easters a 3-0 lead with a wrist shot goal only 6:14 into the second period.
The Hawks answered less than 30 seconds later as Kevin Dazkevich (West Hartford, Conn.) potted a goal from the left face-off circle to make it a 3-1 game. Jon Pallotta (Leominster, Mass.) made it a one-goal game only 1:30 later as he went five-hole on the UNE netminder.
UNE took back momentum midway through the period when Tom Gildersleeve scored a short-handed goal at the 10:13 mark on the backhand to give the Nor'Easters a 4-2 lead headed into the final period. Trevor Fleurent scored what would prove to be a pivotal goal only 4:34 into the third period as he tipped home a shot from Tucker Ross and into the back of the net for a 5-2 advantage.
Pallotta's second tally of the game at the 7:51 mark cut the deficit to only 5-3. Facing a two goal deficit, the Hawks pulled their goalie for the final 1:44 of the game and eventually broke through with the extra skater as Bryan Green (Weymouth, Mass.) made it a 5-4 game with his seventh goal of the season, but only 13 seconds remaining in the game. Saint Anselm was unable to get off a shot in the final seconds as UNE held on for the 5-4 win.
Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) was tagged with the setback for the Hawks. He totaled 14 saves in two periods of play before giving way to Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.), who came on to make 11 saves in the final stanza.
The Hawks held a slight 32-30 advantage in shots for the game and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Assumption College at 7:00 p.m. as a part of Senior Night for the Hawks.
