MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jeremy Carignan and Vin D'Amato each had two goals and an assist and the Saint Anselm College men's hockey team used a four-goal flurry in the second period to surge past Stonehill 7-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday evening at Sullivan Arena.
Box Score
After Stonehill (3-2-1, 1-1-0 NE-10) scored the opening goal early in the second period, Saint Anselm (3-3-0, 2-0-0 NE-10) rattled off four goals in the span of 2:44 to take a 4-1 lead. The Skyhawks netted the first goal of the third period before the Hawks scored the final three to remain unbeaten (6-0-1) in the last seven home games against Stonehill.
Saint Anselm's seven goals were the team's most since a 7-2 victory over the Skyhawks on Feb. 19, 2013, a span of 86 games.
In addition to Carignan and D'Amato's big nights, Brendon Kerrigan recorded three assists and Jon Pallotta and Nick Leonard each had two helpers. In total, 12 skaters had at least one point for Saint Anselm, with Peter Sikalis, Trey Aiello and Lawrence Taylor IV each adding goals.
The Hawks controlled a scoreless opening period, outshooting the Skyhawks 13-4 but it was the visitors who got on the board first in the second. Evan Jacques converted a breakaway off a pass from Connor Tedesco to give Stonehill a short-lived 1-0 advantage.
Less than three minutes later, Aiello started the Saint Anselm barrage, scoring for the third time in four games at 6:28. The freshman fired the puck in from the slot after a wrap-around by Leonard to even the score at 1-1.
The Hawks then scored twice in 40 seconds less than a minute and a half later to go ahead 3-1. Carignan gave Saint Anselm the lead by scoring from the right dot off a pass from Pallotta on the power play. With the Hawks still on the power play, Kerrigan streaked into the Stonehill zone, dropped it off to Carignan, who unselfishly found D'Amato wide open for his first of the year.
Just 43 seconds after D'Amato made it 3-1, Lawrence Taylor IV scored his second collegiate goal, putting home a rebound off a Brian Cameron shot at 9:12 of the second. The Hawks' two power-play goals in the second were part of four in the game, as Saint Anselm capitalized on 12 Stonehill penalties by going 4-for-10 with the man advantage.
The Skyhawks got one goal back on a Tommy Newton goal at 5:48 of the third to cut the Hawks' lead to two. However, the second goals of the night from Carignan and D'Amato and one from Sikalis helped the Hawks end any thought of a Stonehill comeback.
Carignan got his second by jamming in a rebound after a Pallotta shot at 11:36 of the third. D'Amato and Sikalis netted Saint Anselm's third and fourth power-play goals of the night. Kerrigan found D'Amato at the near side of the right circle for a one-timer at 13:57 before Sikalis tucked in a rebound from a Kerrigan shot with just 35.9 seconds remaining.
Shane Joyce made 25 saves for Saint Anselm to improve to 3-2-0 on the year, while Billy Palmer stopped 34 shots for Stonehill. Shots for the game were 41-27 in favor of the Hawks.
Saint Anselm's next game is not until Tuesday, Nov. 29 when the Hawks travel to Southern New Hampshire in search of the third-straight victory in NE-10 play in a 7:30 p.m. game.
