Women's soccer takes down previously-unbeaten, No.4 Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team handed fourth-ranked Stonehill College its first loss of the season with a 2-0 victory over the previously-unbeaten Skyhawks on Friday afternoon at Melucci Field.

Box Score

Caly Farina had a goal and an assist as Saint Anselm (5-6-1, 3-4-1 NE-10) scored both its goals in the second half to take down Stonehill (10-1-1, 6-1-1 NE-10). The win snapped the Skyhawks' 11-game unbeaten streak to start the season and was the Hawks' third-straight NE-10 victory.

The game marked the first time the Hawks had played a top-five team since a 2-0 victory over top-ranked Saint Rose on Oct. 11, 2014. Prior to Friday, the Skyhawks had only conceded six goals in 11 games and only one opponent (Adelphi) had managed to score more than one goal against Stonehill's defense.

Saint Anselm outshot Stonehill 7-4 in the opening half and had a golden chance to go ahead in the 34th minute but Jamie Block denied Kendra Bonczar the opening goal in a 1-on-1.

The Hawks took the lead in the 58th minute as Farina latched onto a headed through ball from fellow freshman Kiley Larocque and finished a breakaway into the lower-left corner. The goal was Farina's third of the season, while Larocuqe earned her first collegiate point with the assist.

About 20 minutes later, Farina was the provider for Bonczar's third goal of the season to double Saint Anselm's lead and give the Hawks an insurance goal. After Farina played in Bonczar up the right wing, Bonczar tried to cut the ball back to the the top of the box but her attempt ricocheted over the line.

Saint Anselm limited Stonehill to just two shots on goal in the game and Cassie Quattropani stopped both for her second shutout of the season. It was Quattropani's 11th-career shutout and her fifth victory of the season.

The Hawks look to build off the victory on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Franklin Pierce in a 4 p.m. game. The game will be the team's Cancer Awareness Game at Melucci Field.
