MANCHESTER, N.H. – After trailing 4-0, the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team mounted a late surge but was unable to overcome the four-goal deficit in a 5-3 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday afternoon at Melucci Field.
Box Score
Southern New Hampshire (9-7-1, 6-6-1 NE-10) built a 4-0 lead in the 70th minute before Saint Anselm (5-11-1, 3-9-1 NE-10) twice got within two goals in a frantic final 20 minutes. The two teams combined for five goals in 10:21 prior to a scoreless final 10 minutes and the eight combined goals were the most in a game involving the Hawks since a 6-2 victory at Pace on Oct. 11, 2008.
Down 4-0, the Hawks started their rally on a penalty kick goal by Corey Murray in the 71st minute after she was clattered into by the SNHU goalkeeper. Murray took the penalty herself and rifled the ball into the side-netting for her fourth of the year.
A little less than six minutes later, Murray played in Alexis Elowitch on the right wing and the junior tucked a right-foot finish inside the far post after cutting inside to make it 4-2. Just 2:32 after that, the Penmen increased their lead back to three as Abigail Maker completed her hat trick on a breakaway.
The goals kept coming, however, as Elowitch grabbed her second of the game 64 seconds after Maker's third goal, robbing the ball off a defender and dribbling around the goalkeeper for her first-career two-goal game.
Southern New Hampshire claimed a 3-0 lead at the break with all three goals coming in a span of 7:54 in the final 15 minutes of the half. Maker scored in the 32nd and 39th minutes before Danielle Humphreys scored in the 40th minute for the Penmen. Humphreys added her second of the game in the 70th minute to give the visitors the 4-0 advantage.
Autumn Scanlon earned the win for Southern New Hampshire with a six-save performance. Cassie Quattropani suffered the loss despite five saves in the first half, while Elise Bouchard made two saves in the final 45 minutes.
The Penmen outshot the Hawks 23-15 overall and 13-9 in shots on goal on the afternoon.
Saint Anselm concludes its season and honors its seven seniors on Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a 1 p.m. kickoff against New Haven at Melucci Field.
