New Haven overcomes O'Callaghan's opener to top men's soccer

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Emmet O'Callaghan gave the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team a 1-0 lead but the University of New Haven scored the last four goals to top the Hawks 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field.

Box Score

O'Callaghan scored his team-high fifth goal of the season in the 19th minute for Saint Anselm (3-9-1, 2-7-1 NE-10), as he raced onto a flicked on pass from midfield and tapped the ball in off the post. However, New Haven (6-7-1, 3-6-1 NE-10) scored twice in either half to record the victory.

The Chargers had an immediate response to O'Callaghan's opener, scoring just 49 seconds later through Evans Kussi, who collected a pass from Pablo Perez, beat a defender and finished with his left foot. Seven and a half minutes later, New Haven took the lead as Perez set up Nate Peduzzi for a header off a free kick in the 27th minute.

Saint Anselm had a chance to tie the game at 2-2 in the 52nd minute but Stefano Lorusso denied Nick Heckt his first-collegiate goal with a sprawling save. Heilo Meirelles Neto kept the score at 2-1 with saves against Rob Poirier and Kussi in the 56th and 72nd minutes.

Shortly after Neto turned away Kussi, Corey Kennedy made it 3-1 by tapping in a Peduzzi cross after 73 minutes. The Chargers added another goal exactly one minute later on a penalty kick by Aurochit Patnaik.

Saint Anselm had two late chances to get a goal back, as Lorusso turned a goal-bound Keith Hill drive around the post and the Chargers cleared a JD Hayward header off the line off the ensuing corner in the 79th minute.

The Hawks registered a season-high 25 shots in the game, compared to 15 for the Chargers, although the hosts had a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Neto made five saves in his fifth consecutive start, while Lorusso earned the win by making six stops.

Saint Anselm travels to Adelphi to face the Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 22 in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
